However, I had EXACTLY the same reaction when I saw the Buckingham Guard standing at attention to our national song. I sent the following to two of my email lists yesterday and in the light of your last mail wanted to share with you here as well how all of us over in Europe have been touched and affected by the tragedy. we might be geographically distanced, but it's only geography. peace, Katrin - -------------------- friends, i have seen the horrors unfold from a distance, but not from a distance. when i first heard the terrible news i thought it was a joke, it was just too unreal. hollywood. ten seconds later i was running from my meeting to my computer to send emails to all my ny and washington and often traveling friends - thankfully i heard back from all of them by now. watching cnn at home the remainder of the day had me in a state of shock, anger and sadness. my mom called later at night because worried relatives had called her, wondering if i was in the states right now or on an airplane. i constantly fly, ny, boston, la are all places i go to for work - just a bit over a month ago i was at the wtc. i'm not sure how i will feel about flying in the future, though i probably don't have much of a choice. Germany has been in a state of shock, an enormous outpouring of solidarity and sympathy has been forming towards the US in the last 2 days. This morning at ten everything in the country stopped for five minutes, all the factories, busses, trains, planes, people stood still for a few symbolic minutes of silence. schools have cancelled classes, turning them into question hours for the children. Official festivites, concerts and fairs have been cancelled. The restaurants and movie theatres are empty. Parliament has suspended its current session. Churches are offering rememberance services. Munich is thinking about cancelling this year's oktoberfest. tomorrow there will be a march in berlin. flowers have been placed in front of buildings connected to the states. the music channels have suspended their regular programs. other channels have turned to 24 hours of news. many inidividuals and companies are donating money for the families of those rescueworkers who died. rescue-teams and dogs are waiting to deployed to the states, however there are no planes to the states flying again yet. Germany, along with the other NATO members, has pledged to support the US in their reaction. when i walk through the floors at work i see shocked faces. hardly anybody is going about business as usual. there is sorrow, anger, and the fear of military retaliation turning into war. what a sad occasion for the world to move closer together. Over here we're all at loss of words for this but all those affected by the tragedy are in our thoughts. as a friend wrote to me yesterday: here's to a more compassionate world in the future katrin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 13:19:27 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: softly and tenderly Carol, You got that right! We definitely didn't have "hymns" alot growing up, but then again, since it was a "Jewish Lite" household (I love Norman's "half the guilt" comment!), we weren't exactly playing Yiddish folk songs and dancing the hora either. Amazon.com has set up a very simple way for people to donate to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund through their website. If you have an Amazon account, your donation goes through just as though you've made a purchase with ALL money going directly to the Fund and with Amazon waiving its fees. Since Tuesday, they've collected almost $5 million. http://www.amazon.com/red-cross I hope you, your friends, and family are all safe and well... Ironically, the company that is providing the humor (Deutsche Bank) was partially located in one of the buildings next to the WTC that has also collapsed. For the record, I taste very good with Vidalia onion barbeque sauce. I just joined the Shindell list, and I wanted to briefly introduce myself. I'm a student, and a Canadian, and I've been listening to Richard Shindell for about a year. A friend introduced me to Dar Williams last summer, and I discovered Richard through her. I've yet to explore the third member of the troika, Lucy Kaplansky, but I'm sure I'll get to her soon enough. I'm not sure how much I'll be contributing to these discussions - I don't know much about Shindell as an individual, and even after a year I feel like I've just scratched the surface of his music. But I'm very interested in hearing what other people have to say, so I'd like to just listen, ponder, and occasionally chip in a comment. _____ Kate "Thorokano" Morris "I refuse to participate in a battle of wits against an unarmed opponent.
