I'm not sure if I'm imagining this, but he always seems to give a little bit more when he plays here. Well, he did grow up here after all, and perhaps he does feel like he's coming home. Regardless of the reason, Richard on Long Island is not to be missed. This was never more true than it was last night, when he gave what has to be one of the best shows I've witnessed from him--yes, this one was right up there. Lister Sandi Bernstein thought it was the best Richard show she'd ever seen (and she's seen alot, I'm sure). I didn't keep a setlist, but Richard did quite a few covers, including Willin, Just A Hobo (I think this is the title), Darkness, Darkness and one or two more, and he nailed them all, just as he nailed all his own tunes, including truly heart-rendering versions of Wisteria, You Stay Here, Courier, Reunion Hill and Transit, to name just a few. But the highlight of the evening for sure was Richard performing, for the first time, his new song while playing on his own turqoise Fender Telecaster, which he said he has owned since he was 14. There's no title to the new song as yet, but for me it was another Wisteria moment--I felt that same sense of awe and chills as I did when I first heard Wisteria (played at another free show at Lincoln Center a few years ago). The new one is right up there with the best Richard has written IMO. After the show, when everyone had left, Richard and I listened to this song twice more in my car. It was a live recording, so it was a little rough, but MY God, this is a GREAT, GREAT song. A real "keeper" as Gene Frey turned and said to me after Richard performed it on the stage during the show. Richard asked me not to say much more on the List about the song--I guess he wants everyone to react to it on their own without any pre-formed notions. He'll get reaction, no doubt about that. Richard was in fine spirits despite all the troubles back in Argentina. He looked great, sounded great (he had Lincoln with him on bass, a nice touch) and it was great spenidn some time with him. I'll be looking forward to seeing him at the Turning Point again. Also good to see Listers Jeff, Sandi, Norman, Gene, Isabelle and if I'm leaving anyone out I'm sorry. We all knew we had witnessed something special. Jeff opened for Peter one night at the Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson, WI, Peter was damnably impressed, and told us we needed to check him out. He was right. Between Jeff's literate songwriting, quietly stunning guitar-work, and gorgeous, weathered voice, his album, MILES FROM THE LIGHTNING, is hands-down, bar-none the most impressive debut I've heard in recent years. Jeff will be doing a string of shows in Massachusetts at the end of August/early September and the dates are listed below. Note that Jeff's only full-length show will be a house concert at my place (Moneypenny House Concerts) on August 31. There are still tickets left but the reservations are coming in pretty steadily so, if you're interested, e-mail me SOON! Visit: http://www.jeffreyfoucault.com to listen to MP3s or to purchase a copy of MILES FROM THE LIGHTNING and, of course, feel free to get in touch if you'd like any additional information. Hope to see you at a show! Perhaps, in fact, these songs have been wafting about the universe for decades, waiting for Jeffrey Foucault. We've been playing and playing the songs and have a hard time deciding whether it's the melodies or the lyrics, the singing or the arrangements that is most captivating. Everyone loves this record. Not much to add except to concur with Ron and say it was an awesome event! (sorry I didn't see you Ron, my eyesight isn't what it used to be! Early in the evening, I passed right by Richard, not realizing it was him until too late!)I also brought a bunch of family members and they loved him! It was funny when I saw the electric guitar on the stage, I figured he must have someone opening for him! He kept debating whether to play it again after the new song and my husband yelled out "Pick it up!" and he did! My daughter wants to know if "Arrowhead" is based on the book "The Red Badge of Courage". She said the song was the same as the book. I don't know if this was mentioned before. Just wondering! Of course, this IS a Richard story, so take it with a grain of salt. They tend to vary!! RG ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #272 ***********************************
