We stream 24x7 with nothing but great folk and acoustic music, no pledge drives, no Jesuit Inspiration Hour, no Elton John (I promise on my platform shoes!). The playlist page lets you click through to more info on any artist you've heard. We're eclectic enough I guarantee you'll "discover" somebody :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 13:11:15 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [RS] what happened yesterday hey gene et al.. i also was on the LIE.. we could have had a party in the rain and heard what denis tried to pass off as an alternative version of elton john.. not growing up in NY with NY radio.. i dont get denis at all.. he seems to be a rock jock..and i dont care for his choices of Beach boys, CSNY, Old rocker tunes on my dial.. the mid day slots.. darren... brings in ALOT of money... darren.. plays too much beatles and his wife loves lucy kaplansky.. so i tolerate him claudia marshalll plays richard shindell more than any other jock. get darren to play richard,, maybe crycrycry.. or denis.. he'll play dar... corny will play him if you ask.. claudia is expanding her knowledge of music.. and for a morning show she does a hell of a job.. she takes calls from listeners... answers mail.. and will get to your request.. her interviews are interesting at least... who else wants to be in the studio at 9:00.. nanci griffith was raspy at 9 and rita did the interview dont throw out the babysitter with the baby- ... sharon I danced a lot of nights until the grass was wet It wasn't over yet Round 'bout 3AM you made a friend And I followed a lot of idle crazy thoughts because It's where the meaning was Though I tried to find it every other way ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 15:07:15 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V3 #267 In a message dated 8/14/2001 4:57:19 AM Eastern Daylight Time, owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org writes: << WFUV - They have been going downhill fast ever since they 'tweaked' their format after Meg Griffin left. >> Dear Gene and other WFUV bashers: I've tried to keep quiet and out of the fray, but can no longer stand by and watch everyone trash WFUV! Am I the only one who realizes what a gem WFUV and other public radio stations are, and how vulnerable and ephemeral they are to being shut down for good, forever? As bad as it might be for you to listen to Elton John, imagine sitting in your car listening to Opie and Anthony or Z100, or the other alternatives on the FM dial. Here in Connecticut, we have only WFUV and a few local public radio stations who are hanging on for dear life. It's true that FUV has "evolved" since Meg Griffin left, and yes, they do tend to try to please a broader listening audience by playing more mainstream stuff than they used to. But trust me when I tell you that I work for public television, and every single day FUV stays on the air is a gift...the television and radio stations that are supported only by listeners like you and I, plus some corporate underwriters/grants are in imminent danger of being shut down, even more imminent since President Bush was voted into office. Sure, FUV did cancel the polka show, and they don't play Richard as much as I'd like, but what about the good parts? And what's wrong with Dennis Elsis? I used to love WNEW and WPLJ when they were great back in the 70's, until they truly sold out and became much worse stations that the one you are describing FUV as...it's a delicate balance FUV must achieve--between pleasing listeners with truly good programming and staying afloat by going ever-so-slightly mainstream sometimes... to guarantee their survival and day-to-day financial support it isn't economically feasible for FUV to keep on a polka program a few people listen to...a fine line between culture and commerce that I happen to think FUV treads very well. Can I be the only one to step up and defend these guys? WFUV is a treasure and we be thankful every day it remains on the air. Otherwise, it's all Brittany... all the time... If this doesn't send chills down your spine, you gotta be a vulcan...or a republican. I quote: "For the second time in five months, a Christian network called American Family Radio has supplanted an NPR member station that served the tranquil community of 70,000...Today you can't get public radio in Lake Charles at all, and NPR fans aren't happy about it." I'll bet turning on 90.7 one morning and listening to Reverend Billy Bob would make you yearn for the old FUV, maybe even for Dennis Elsas or Claudia Marshall! With all this coversation going on about WFUV, I had to laugh because on my way home (on the LIE, too!) they played "Are You Happy Now"!! So, maybe there's hope for it. It is still better than listening to most of the garbage that is out there. Janet Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! I knew if I waited long enough somebody had to come out in defense of FUV. The only thing I have to add is that if FUV is going downhill (which I don't think it is) is started when Meg Griffin arrived, not when she left (it really started when Ben Soper (sp?) left, but that's another story). FUV is responsible for a large part of my CD collection and I'm happy I'm a member. virginia In a message dated 8/14/2001 3:09:43 PM Eastern Daylight Time, LBECKLAW@aol.com writes: > Dear Gene and other WFUV bashers: > > I've tried to keep quiet and out of the fray, but can no longer stand by > and > watch everyone trash WFUV!
