If you don't know the old WFUV, please feel free to delete, or page down if you're reading the digest. Thanks. WFUV - They have been going downhill fast ever since they 'tweaked' their format after Meg Griffin left. World Cafe got stuck in the middle of the night. Claudia Marshall plays almost nothing but cutesy novelty crap all morning, and they buried Darren DeVivo at 10 AM-2 PM, when nobody can listen in their cars or at the breakfast table. Then, worst of all, they exhumed Dennis Elsas from the mausoleum of classic rock that WNEW had become. He seemed to play Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, CSN and The Band almost exclusively. But today, they really did it. They finally made me snap. I decided to turn Elsas' show on during the rain-drenched traffic jam on my way home, and I heard none other than Elton John. That's right, Elton freakin' John. Captain Fantastic. The cinematic Pinball Wizard. The composer of the ultra-banal Lion King soundtrack. This is City Folk? I don't know whether to cry or puke. Enough is enough. I've written Chuck Singleton, the program director, before, and wrote to him again today, cancelling my membership. The next nickel in donations they see from me will be after I read in the Daily News that they've thrown Dennis Elsas overboard. Until then, it's CDs in the car and WXPN or WUMB on the computer. By the way, I called the WFUV concert calendar the other day. They had tickets for Sister Sledge and the Ohio Players. John Platt, Sundays 8 AM to 11 AM, still runs the best show on radio, and Darren DeVivo and Corny O'Connell are fine, when I get a chance to listen. However, WFUV has totally hosed their drive-time shows, when the most people are listening, in an effort to suck cash from the wallets of baby boomers who feel that the other classic rock stations play too much Boston, or something. And, in the process, ruined a great station. Gene F. Although, I listen to WFUV while at work (I had to bring in an old receiver and hook up a Terk antenna, but by golly, I can pull it in to downtown Brooklyn now!), so I do listen to Darren DeVivo. > exclusively. That's right, Elton Yes, but did you notice what version of the song that was? I was listening in my van at that point, driving through Old Brookville in the rain. It was not bad. > However, WFUV has totally hosed their drive-time shows, when the most people > are listening, in an effort to suck cash from the wallets of baby boomers It isn't the station it was. It used to be I would put it on and within minutes hear something I had never heard before, something I would have to go out and learn more about. Jackson Brown I learned about when i was 13... You go, guy. I have been struggling with whether to pull the plug or not, but will probably wait until my current membership is up for renewal. I recently emailed John Platt, who, as you noted has a good program, thanking him for playing D&T, and saying it's too bad the weekday folks don't follow his lead (he emailed back, saying he'd pass my thoughts on to whomever). I've emailed Claudia Marshall (who has said on air that "we listen to you!") that I'd like to hear, um...that particular duo (Nancy is forgetting this is the RS list...sorry...) and if the station had its hands on the new Lynn Miles cd, well that would be great too, and I got back a , "well, we'll try, but we can't take such specific requests" kind of answer. If I maintain membership, it will only be because of the particular programs I like, such as Sunday Breakfast, Woody's Children (I'm a Bob Sherman fan from waaayyy back at wqxr when it was still on AM and FM) and The Big Broadcast. I still think Mixed Bag and Idiot's Delight have there place, unfortunately at the cost of the quirkier shows at FUV. I'm not ashamed to admit that I found Polka Party comforting. And another evening of Rich Conaty, some big bands, low flatulent trombones and Swing Time weren't a bad thing. Is this what happens when something that has worked outside the box finds a larger audience? Does it all end up being some homogenized, bland, who cares kinda thing? FUV rescued me from the middle of the dial, but now it looks like it's time to look elsewhere. With apologies to all for lack or RS content (though I should say that last year fuv featured him one day, at my request), Nancy (by the way, Gene, I'm sure you knew that Meg Griffin would sometimes play The Weather) ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #267 ***********************************
