When you're there, you're there. If you've stayed the full time and driven back to the "real world" you remember the shock :) * Baking sun, freezing cold, drenching rain, and Africanized killer moths! Why pay thousands for an adventure safari when it's waiting at Long Hill Farm? * No big hassle quotient. Everyone is just folks, including performers and industry people who spend much of the rest of the year in the grown-up world. * Fresh hot pizza at 11:30pm. Nothing that bad for you has any right to taste so good. * The hill, in all its aspects. The grasshopper-flecked slopes, the tarp-laden bowl, the bannered crest full of Camps of every persuasion. * The song circles around real fires, with real folkies (dammit) forgetting the words to real folk songs. * The moon, in whatever phase it graces us. * Assorted heaps of dung, compost, offal and dust greeting us on the way in and out, as a mortally wise reminder of where we're all going someday :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 15:05:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: [RS] Falcon Ridge I just want to add my 2 cents to the Falcon Ridge conversation. I went for the first time last year and let me tell you it was the best three days I've had in a long time! I feel it's a combination of all, the music, the people and the farm, with the beautiful night sky. I was telling someone at work about this year's Falcon Ridge and she was amazed that I was able to actually speak with some of the performers and get an autograph and picture too! SO, yeah, I would recommend Falcon Ridge to all. IT's worth putting up with the (ugh) porta potties!! Janet PS Remember to bring blankets though, it gets real chilly at night!! BRRRR! Not to mention the ensemble performances at "Nod to Bob" on "Serve Someboy" and "Rainy Day Woman". Not to mention that incredible woman not only walking but dancing on four-foot high slits. Not to mention Dar's wonderful impression of "Anne Boleyn" in a "Masterpiece Theater" prouction... "I want... strawberries". Not to mention the interplay between Vance Gilbert and Jodi Gill-- "Tell those deaf people to shut up". "Hell-Bent on Saturday" << Carol replies: >> I find it appealing, but to the non-Shindell acolyte -- it might send the wrong message about his "sound" << Actually, given the pretty intense nature of most of Richard's songs, I actually think it sends exactly the RIGHT message about his sound. I certainly don't believe that anyone will accidentally think it's a heavy metal album, and anything that might help send the message to Shindell newbies that -- as Richard's press release says -- "this is not your father's folk music" is bound to at least make people sit up and take notice. I like that there's a bit of an in-joke but also a phrase that will catch people's eyes. My guess is that most people who know something of Richard's work are most acquainted with SNP and thus might get the joke. "Transit" is also one of few (and maybe the only) song from SNP that will be on the Live album. Further Richard and Charlie hope that "Transit" will replace "Are You Happy Now" as Richard's "signature sound" (pun intended). And maybe some people will think it's a Meatloaf album....
