It's called "The English Are So Nice" and it is surprisingly funny--especially since DH is not exactly known for having anything remotely resembling a sense of humor. It's not that nice is bad. It's just that, my goodness, this man is so gifted at really being able to write songs that conjure up whole worlds that to hear something like TW is a bit disappointing. And what else is there to say about it than it's a nice little song about nice feelings? I feel sorta like Frank O'Hara when he says well if you don't like poetry, good for you; only Whitman and Stephen Crane are better than the movies. If you really like it and get something out of it then good for you. Me? I will just hit the repeat button again on The Next Best Western. Oh and JPC--absolutely it was liberating to burn all the old stuff that filled a need at the time. I can understand RS not wanting to keep a cd of what he considers subpar performances out of the public domain. And yes, Charlie, you do always crack me up. Just remember--after you have amassed your ill gotten gains, I will be happy to set up a Tom Is Poor, No Really, Really Poor Foundation, so any donations you would like to make to it can be tax deductible. You let me know. ;-) Tom ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 09:11:06 -0400 From: Lisa Davis & family Subject: Re: [RS] Behind the Scenes of Scenes Charlie of Young/Hunter wrote: > > Even I, Richard's manager, have never seen SCENES FROM A BLUE DIVIDE... Back when Richard was with Shanachie, and a DJ friend called up to ask for it, they didn't even know they had it! >However, Richard feels the performances are not up to snuff, and so asked that we not proceed with that plan. Good for Richard, he is right. I still say, Charlie, try to see if you can get the live recordings that Bill Domler did "way back" in '92-'93. You should hear that first time through with "Fishing," it was absolutely SPELLBINDING. Bill was the sort to have kept those. Some future "archival" CD suggests itself. lisa davis ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 10:36:15 -0400 From: Kerry Bernard Subject: [RS] Re: good music and crap And it looks like you can order the shirt on Turn It Up's website for a whopping $5 (or $8 for long-sleeved). http://www.turnitup.com (follow the "TUI Stuff" link near the bottom left corner) Kerry :) p.s. He is apparently also playing the Troubador. I can't go to either but I thought you would want to know. Call both venues first. I haven't checked this out myself. Sorry for the x-post. I think I may have mentioned before that I really like the song (I like the song in the sense that sharon goes to shows or Ron likes playing the guitar-- that much). It's a different song in her hands. I don't see Dar's "Highway Patrolman" as a woman nor do I see Richard's "Mary Magdalen" as a man. But I see Dar's narrator in Nora as a woman. Adds another dimension to the phrase "Nora, it was no sin". Norman ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 22:00:14 -0400 From: "Norman A.
