What sums up light, inoffensive American conversation, what do you say to someone you don't know or when there's nothing to say, than talking about the weather? jim with a strong chance of heavy thunderstorms and hail this afternoon (no hidden metaphors, that's the forcast.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 08:51:46 -0400 From: "Susan Koval" Subject: [RS] Nice is Bad? It's amazing to me that because "The Weather" is considered to be "nice " it is considered by many to be bad or negative. That a line that salutes parents makes people "cringe." Unfortunately this is a reflection of society at large. I haven't read anything that depressing since last year's World Series results. Believe me, I am no Pollyanna, but this is not that kind of song. The 'smirk' in 'might even love each other,' I think, comes from the realization that despite everything going on in your daily life, two people can still feel that way, after many years. Even if your kids do find it bizarre, and somewhat disgusting. Susan Koval added: >>It's amazing to me that because "The Weather" is considered to be "nice " >>it is considered by many to be bad or negative. That a line that salutes >>parents makes people "cringe."<< And I agree. Look, an entire CD of 'Weather' type songs would be too much, and would not show a great deal about a songwriter. That this song finds its way onto a CD beside "Next Best Western' and 'May' proves that Richard wanted people to hear this. Hey, do you thing that the Fugitive and May might even love each other? And finally, Tom wrote: >>Richard can get LOTS more mileage out of teasing everyone with the >>possibility of his playing it live than actually inflicting it, I mean, >>playing it for us. :)<< Actually, I don't think Richard has been teasing anyone. Some bozo on this list (o.k., it was me) started the whole 'Richard won't play The Weather' thing, partly because I wanted to hear it, and partly because others on the list seemed to find it funny, and mildly pathetic on my part, and I have had a lot of fun with it. I seriously doubt that Richard is even aware of any of this. Gene F. (who is wondering how anyone can call The Weather 'cornball,' and then quote an entire Kansas song. Dust in the Wind? Sorry Elwestrand, I think it's time to lay my weary head to rest.) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 09:09:08 -0700 From: "Gregory Dennis" Subject: [RS] Re: Does she belong to Richard? Does anyone know anything about Richard singing a version of "She Belongs to Me" on a "Tribute to Dylan, Volume II" CD? I found it on mySimon.com as I was looking for a copy of "Scenes from a Blue Divide" (the latter not available there). The existence of this recording by Richard may be old news to many on the list, but it's news to me and I thought I'd check in with the experts. - -- Greg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 12:22:12 EDT From: SMOKEY596@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Re: Does she belong to Richard? >>>I found it on mySimon.com as I was looking for a copy of "Scenes from a Blue Divide" <<< This is the second time I've seen this title on the list. Okay, I'm dumb here or something, but what is this?? Is this referring to the "Blue Divide" CD, which can be purchased from Richard's web site? Or is this something else (that I don't have and need?!)? :-) SMOKEY ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 13:00:32 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Scenes from a Blue Divide. >> This is the second time I've seen this title on the list. Unfortunately, it's long since out of print, and since it's Shanachie, there are probably no plans to make it available commercially. I don't think there is some mysterious dark subtext. And its not like I hate "moms and dads" as a group or even in a song, but there are more interesting ways to talk about them. It is not the tone of the song that makes me cringe. Be happy all you want. A song like "Lazy" for instance is very straightforward, but it has alot more wit than The Weather. > > And I agree. Yes I am sure he thought so at the time but as writer and sometimes folk artist I assure you there are many things I have put out in the world which I would like to retrieve given the opportunity. There is a reason Van Gogh cut off his ear! Art is traumatic somedays. Maybe some of the other creative types on this list can back me up here? I really think that if Richard liked this song, he would play it. I mean, why wouldn't he EVER play it. Its one thing if he used to play it, but its fallen out of the lineup, but from what I understand he NEVER plays it. Are there any other RS songs which are this unloved? > Gene F. Deal? And I won't even argue that "Kansas" is not cornball, in fact if I remember my South Pacific nothing is "as corny as Kansas!" E P.S. I also love the song "Separate Lives." I don't think we have to apologize for liking mainstream music, too. None of us live in a box. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 16:22:37 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Weather and traffic, on the ones >> Are there any other RS songs which are this unloved? << I don't necessarily think it's a matter of Richard not liking the song . . . it's just that he sort of dashed it together and it wasn't one of those songs that he ripped from his soul. I've never heard him talk about it with disdain. Also, I don't necessarily disagree with the poster who felt that there might be a dark subtext to the song. Heck, even Richard wrote that extra verse to "Lazy" to put a twist on it's "It's happy on the surface, but I am, after all, Richard 'Doom & Gloom' Shindell" message.
