Vanessa gasped: <<>>So, am I the only one who actually likes Merritt Parkway? <<>> And Norman opined: <> As I said long ago, I believe that "Merrit Parkway, 3am" isn't so much "filler" for filler's sake, but makes for a more gentle transition from the gentleness of "Grocer's Broom" to the hard-edged "Transit". I wouldn't be surprised, either, if -- like "The Weather" -- this song was written in the studio, with no real intentions of being heard again other than from the CD. At the very least, he would need to do it on one of his nights with a full band, and that, to me, would have to include someone on drums for all the neat little cymbal flourishes. So much of the heart of that song lies in the production--the way it gets fleshed out on SNP. << Well, Denny has been in his band for a number of recent shows and Denny was the drummer for the SNP version of that song. At least, that's what the liner notes say. They also credit Richard for the vocals on "Merritt Parkway"! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 04:29:19 From: "Emily Johnson" Subject: [RS] Merritt Parkway I'm also a fan of Merritt Parkway, though I have nothing particularly eloquent to say about it. I put it on a mix tape for my girlfriend and she's now thoroughly converted to Richard, though I think "Spring" and "On a Sea of Fleur-De-Lis" had a little more to do with it. :) I like the song for itself, but also for the way it provides a break between the rest of the album and the last two tracks. I like that instrumental space before the powerful imagery of "Transit" and "Calling the Moon." That's more than I've ever posted to this list, so that's enough from me.
