I think that at its heart it is about the people you see everyday and take for granted. There seems to in general be a theme in Richard's music of people one might not pay alot of attention to: the local grocer, a courier, a happy trucker, a girl learning to play the flute, the toll booth attendent, a biblical whore, a shell-shocked vet. It seems vitally important to Richard that we find out more about these people. He reminds us that everyone has a story. This song also touched me because my father retired in 2000 at 76! It almost seemed inconcievable that he wouldn't work. We were fairly certain he would "die with his boots on." I can't imagine what it must feel like to end a commitment of that length. He was in the same business for almost 50 years. I sort of thought this song gave me a peak into it. He is ecstatically happy btw. He is like a whole different person. Too bad he didn't do it earlier. As for wearing out vinyl I definitely worn out at least one copy of Duran Duran's Rio. I have killed tapes by many artists. I have also created a skip in my copy of Sparrow's point. Speaking of vinyl I have worked with this amazing guy to find some really rare records. If any of you are on the hunt for anything unusual, especially eighties, he is your man. His e- mail is dalienday@aol.com. He recently helped me find a record I have been looking for since 1985! And not only did he find me the album he also found a sealed 12" single. Naturally I had to have them both! Oh and he's reasonable and a genuinely nice guy. Ok, bed time. In that case, Janis Ian's Between the Lines and the first two sides of Judy Collins' So Early in the Spring "wore out." Actually, Between the Lines was the second cd I bought--even before I bought the cd player (the first: The Smiths' The World Won't Listen as an import). It took me a long long time to get used to the songs not skipping. I had memorized the skips! LOL. I will listen to "The Grocer's Broom" in a bit and see what comes to mind. I have been trying to write a long poem about my neighbor across the street when I was a wee thing. He was 97 and I was 6 and he used to give all the kids jelly beans every day. His son forced him into a nursing home against his will and he died about 6 weeks after moving out of his house. When he died, he left me a set of Charles Dickens' books from the 1870s or 80s that I still have. I actually do have to start reading them these days. I do remember that everytime I have listened to TGB, I have thought about Mr. Lewis and his great goodness. I am sure the song will make me think about him again. Oh, one of the things I am trying to write about are all the outdoor games we used to play. Anyone care to help me compile a list? This is what I have so far: Manhunt, kickball, stickball, dodgeball, kill the guy with the ball, baseball, tag football, steal the bacon, tag, boxball, red light green light 123, simon says, jacks, jumprope, hide and go seek, hopscotch, twenty questions, tug of war, red rover, kick the can, statues Thanks!
