[Graham Gudgin ] [RS] Living in the shadow of Ellis Paul ["Norman A. Johnson" Any up-to-the-minute plans to bring Richard this side of the Blue Divide? We're > still waiting patiently! > > Gerry > YES!!!! Let's bring the man on this side of the Blue Divide. I'll settle for the UK and will happily swim, row or fly over there to see Richard. And if there are reason unknown to us that make a Richard solo UK-tour unrealistic, a Lucy-Richard double bill would be quite alright, too :) Katrin, really bad with that patience thing and definitely exceeding her RS-list email quote for today :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 09:16:47 -0700 From: Lee Wessman Subject: [RS] broken camels As the poster of the post that broke the back of Graham's camel -- and at the risk of boring not just you but me as well -- I gotta clarify what I was getting at with my observations about the Berkeley show. I don't really care if RS moves back to the states, stays in Argentina, plays while sitting down or plays standing on his head. As a fan of his music, what I care most about is his ability to go on writing and recording great songs. (And if a live show on the West Coast is thrown in every now and again, so much the better.) My observations should be taken entirely in that context: Can a singer-songwriter who is eking out a living on the folk circuit do it as a multi-continental commuter? For those out there who have tried the touring-songwriter folk schtick, it's difficult not to remark on the stamina he displays and to speculate on how this venture will affect the creative process. I'm not trying to make a case that "the move was bad" for him. Heck, I'm in awe of it. I'm merely interested in watching it happen. How can a move to Argentina NOT be the subject of conversation during his second tour since he went south? And now I'll shut up before I kill another camel. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 13:05:27 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] broken camels >> it's difficult not to remark on the stamina he displays and to speculate on how this venture will affect the creative process. << Well, he'll certainly have a lot of time on the airplane in which to write. ;-) Hey, it's not like Richard's the most prolific writer in the world to start with -- what, he's got one new song since SNP? -- so I can't imagine his productivity dropping too much. >> How can a move to Argentina NOT be the subject of conversation during his second tour since he went south? << OK, so here's a question for Charlie: in the time since Richard made the move, has he, in actuality, dramatically cut back on the number of shows he's performed over an equivalent time period compared to BEFORE the move? Johnson" Subject: [RS] Living in the shadow of Ellis Paul I was just at an amazing Ellis Paul show at the Iron Horse. He was definitely on. He played at least one new, new song and said that a new album should be coming out either in late fall or early next year. Going back to our "name dropping thread", a guy at my table mentioned that a songwriter who had opened for Ellis had written a song called "Living in the shadow of Ellis Paul" & that it had been played on local Boston radio. I think the songwriter was David Seoh. Ob Richard, Charlie wrote: >> Yep, it is the esteemed Mr. Campbell. The live cd will be virtually all songs from the Emelin and Outpost shows... though we're trying to figure out a way to get Mr. Campbell in there at least a little bit. Maybe from one of the Argentinian shows... << Anything with the highly esteemed Mr. Campbell is good. I'm still holding out for Richard to cover "For a dancer" with Dar/Lucy harmony and a Larry Campbell solo. Second, I second the question, has Richard done shows in his new homeland? Right, Katrin? :-) Actually, that song is by Kevin So, and he certainly is a great up and coming talent. It appears on his new CD, "That Oriental Guy", which is available at his website, www.kevinso.com. That is a very hilarious song, containing everything from Vance Gilbert to Ralph Jaccodine (Ellis' manager). Kevin is a very funny guy onstage and in song. I would definitely recommend checking him (and Ellis!) out. :-) "Ibm standing in the shadow of Ellis Paul I play a lot of coffeehouses but not the concert hall If Ibm really lucky I might get recognized at the mall "Hey youbre that Oriental guy who opened for Ellis Paul !"
