I want to more than second that one. That man is my personal hero. If you're not a nerdy trekkie, but more the geeky comic book type like me, you should check out his SpyBoy, Captain Marvel, Super-Girl, or (my personal favorite) his historic 12-year run on The Incredible Hulk. He's truly awesome. And since this has no RS content so far, I'll continue that trend by saying that I noticed someone was listening to "Drum Hat Buddha." Is i available now? Is it best to order it off the web, or from some store? Been looking for some new tunes lately and you all have given me lots of ideas to check out. I've been listening to a lot of different stuff lately, not all of it new. All the talk of Stan Rogers got me listening to Northwest Passage and Turnaround this week. He's still one of my favorites. I've been listening to some demos of a young pedal steel player named Robert Randolph lately. He has a very unique sound - kind of a gospel based Stevie Ray Vaughan, for lack of a better description. The guy is a stunning performer. Also.... John Gorka - Temporary Road. New Model Army - And Nobody Else. Marah - Kids In Philly. Steve Earle - The Mountain. Kasey Chambers - The Captain. Bob Marley - Catch A Fire. Lots of Kate Wolf and uh, (ahem) ..... a couple of the new Pearl Jam live recordings. Well, as usual, I have an eclectic mix in my CD changer right now: John Hiatt - 'Crossing Muddy Waters'; Richard Thompson - 'Mock Tudor'; Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer - 'Tanglewood Tree'; Slaid Cleaves - 'Broke Down' ( "...it's Breakfast in Hell, boys...") and Mary Gauthier (pronounced "Go-Shay") - 'Drag Queens in Limousines'. Mary opened at Slaid Cleaves' show last week and while she's a little more alt.-country than I usually listen to, I really like what she's doing; and oh, you should see her *attack* that harmonica. The interaction with the audience was terrific. The pain/Spain song was a comic highlight. As a non guitar player I was wondering if Richard sat down during the entire set because he was playing with one cracked and one broken guitar? I don't remember him doing this before in Berkeley. It was tough to see him since the Freight is pretty much a flat venue. It was damaged at Godfrey's before the show last Wednesday (I did seating for that show) We were all very upset about it and I was hoping it could be repaired. The crack in the neck was very severe, though, and I had my doubts. It was certainly not able to be played that night (which is the reason he had Amy's guitar.) So if he used it last night I'm assuming he had some work done on it. Did he mention anything more about it at the show? ...Whether it's able to be fixed, etc. Any news is much appreciated. Thanks, Shelley (I can't believe his Martin was damaged on the plane! It's just too depressing. Two amazing guitars in one week!) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 13:35:40 -0400 From: "Norman A. He picked a rounded shoulder dreadnought sized guitar that he seemd to really like. He used htis for the standard and drop D songs and played the Martin spom16 for the DADGAD ones. BTW, Ron heplayed the Courier to open the show and he fooled me -- Drop D -- almost thought it was DADGAD for a second. The Martin is fixable, but the CFox really should be laid to rest. Not sure why he sat but I imagine it was becuase he chose to do one really long set. - -- john andrew clary "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. I had given money to support music education so long ago that I had forgotten the wonderful bonus to come. Nina Gerber's new solo album is a nice blend of her and others playing instrumentals and some guest vocalists as well. It has a nice jazzy feel and Nina's playing is great, of course. Lucy K. does a cover of Nanci Griffith's Workin' in Corners. It is such a personal song for Nanci, it is hard to appreciate someone covering it, but Lucy does a nice job. Also has Greg Brown doing Kate's Guitar, his song about Nina's playing (Kate left her guitar to Nina). Also has Herb Pedersen, Kim Scanlon, Terry Garthwaite on vocals. Nice record - if you like Nina's work, I recommend. Saw Richard last night. He was relaxed. First time I've seen him sitting throughout. I was hoping to hear some new stuff, but none. Wonder if any of you know if he is writing new stuff or not? I guess I wasn't paying very close attention when I reached for it on the rack. I brought it home and put it on and was surprised to hear Kurt Cobain singing This Wheel's on Fire. I quickly grabbed the jewel box only to discover that I had accidentally purchased Nodding to Bob: Rock and Roll's Best Known Heroin Addicts Salute Bob Dylan by mistake. I gave it couple of listens and it started to grow on me, sort of like a bad habit. It has Jerry Garcia doing Blowing in the Wind, Keith Richards doing an amazing version of Maggie's Farm, Janis Joplin doing a really bluesy soulful version of Rainy Day Women and Lou Reed weighing in with a smokin' Subterranean Homesick Blues, among others. A somewhat difficult to listen to, but gem of a track nevertheless, is Plastic Ono Band featuring John and Yoko doing a primal scream rendition of The Times They Are a Changin'.
