Any Stan fans > on the list? > Oddly enough, Richard was telling the tale in Bethlehem of how he wanted to do an album of sea shanties with James Keelaghan, and was talking about them singing stan rogers songs backstage at a festival or concert in virginia a few years back, making fun of their attempts to replicate Stan's powerful voice. I am a fan of both Stan (whom I discoverd in 84, just a little too late) and Garnet... and sea songs in general, although whole albums of actual shanties wear thin on me. I prefer the contemporary ilk ala Gordon Bok, Rogers etc. Although it's actually an Archie Fisher song, also covered by Garnet, after hearing it again recently I thought The Final Trawl would be a wonderful match for rs. jim colbert state college pa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 07:49:10 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] New Music So who is listening to what lately? Anyone else on the list heard "Nod To Bob," the tribute album from Red House to you know who, who turns 60 on May 24th? Gotta tell ya, Cliff Eberhardt's version of "I Want You" just blows my mind (gotta make him do it when he plays my House Concert on June 10th), as does Guy Davis' rendition of "What's A Sweetheart Like You (doing in a place like this)." And Martin Simpson's intricate guitar work on "Boots of Spanish Leather" is nothing short of amazing. And Lucy's version of "It Ain't Me Babe" really breathes new life into that Turtles classic. There are some head scratchers on this -- Hart Rouge, for one -- but most of it is terrific. My other heavy rotation CD's: John Gorka's "The Company You Keep," Laura Cantrell's "Not The Tremblin' Kind" (talk about hook-laden melodies) and Anne Hills' "Bittersweet Street" (God, that VOICE!). I'm also liking Al Petteway's "Caledon Wood" alot, though it's not particularly new. Wonder what Richard is listening to these days. "Speak Spanish in Seven MInutes" on book audio? Has anyone heard any comments from RS on Stan, good or bad? Any Stan fans on the list? A friend of mine turned me onto Stan's music about ten years ago. The man was an amazing songwriter with a stunning voice. I'd love to hear Richard cover one of his songs - maybe The Jeannie C or Turnaround. "Valentine Heartache" by Melissa Ferrick. "The Company You Keep" by John Gorka. A tape of a band from Iceland? maybe? called Sigur Ros, I think? (It's out in the car.) Given by a co-worker. And, glutton for punishment that I am -- even though I already re-upped for the year -- the pledge drive on WXPN. Deb ===== You can take the rock band away from the girl and think you've tamed her. How about: "You Can't Stay Here,"(is my memory correct?) or "Harris and the Mare." Deb ===== You can take the rock band away from the girl and think you've tamed her. Don Conoscenti's new release, "Paradox of Grace". Amazing. I had the extreme pleasure of hosting Don for a house concert over the weekend. Also went to see him last night in Louisville and tonight I'm going to Dayton to see him. All I know is, at our house concert, all of the guitar players left with their heads hanging, depressed and claiming they were going to sell their guitars after seeing Don play. :-) Highly recommended! See him if you can. It's sort of folk/alt-country/really weird stuff. And there's even one straight up bluegrass tune on it. Story goes, this guy got discovered living in a trailer in Southern Florida. This is his second album, it's produced by Morcheeba, and it's truly excellent. It's getting a lot of play at 'PRB (some of it from me!) If you want an MP3 of his stuff, e-mail me off list. > thanks for all the reviews guys. This is my first Cheryl Wheeler album and nobody told me I would have to hear the song "Arrow" ten or twenty million times in a row! On the shelf: The new Al Stewart album (Import Only at the moment). I haven't opened it yet cause I have to be able to sit and really listen to it on the big stereo with appropriate reverence! Maybe this weekend. Also I have just wanted to lighten up a bit so I have been listening to alot of embarrassing eighties stuff. Some days I just need a little perky in my life. E Who is eagerly awaiting a couple tapes which are blatent attempts by her friends to expose her to Kate Wolf and Susan Werner. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 15:36:26 EDT From: Pfleary@aol.com Subject: [RS] new music/richard tonight This one keeps coming up, but I have been listening to Gorka's new album The Company You Keep almost nonstop since I bought it at his Berkeley show in early March. I also recently ordered Dar's Christian and Pagans EP from Razor and Tie and have been listening to that a lot as well. It was the cover of Nora that drew me to it, but I can't seem to get enough of that solo acoustic "Traveling Again." Also, all this Nina Gerber talk on this and the Lucyka list has moved her Kate Wolf Retrospective to the top of my play list again and I just bought Nod to Bob this morning and am on the second listen. I believe it will be getting a lot of play at casa del pedro. When my friends and I started going to concerts in high school, we would saturate ourselves with that person's or band's music up until two or three days before the show and then not listen to them at all until the concert. I will be breaking my Richard fast tonight at the Freight! People have been surprised that it sold out a week ago. Part of this is because Richard is gaining more recognition, the other part is if you check his recent schedule you will see no Santa Cruz Kuumbwa, no Davis Palms, no Sebastopol Methodist Church or brewpub, no Palo Alto park full of gabby yuppies and their precious offspring, just one lone show at the Freight drawing us country folk into the big city for a night of folk mayhem.
