[patrick t power ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 09:23:25 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] Richard's Homecoming of Sorts Richard Shindell SOLD OUT the IMAC theater (500 seats) in Huntington last night and then some. They added folding chairs at the ends of the aisles and added about four rows of folding chairs behind the final row of permanent seats (I sat in one of those folding chairs unfortunately, suffering once again for my lack of planning and getting tickets early). He used Putnam's Taylor for all his standard tuning songs as well as his Martin O-16 SP(?) for his open tunings. Surprisingly, he did "Memory of You" a song I've never heard him do. He also did a fantastic rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "Sandy" and it was the high point of the evening for me. I had requested "Nora" before the show and he didn't let me down. He performed it flawlessly. I feel bad for Janet though, who was dying to hear "TV Light," a song I think Richard hasn't perfomed in years. Janet was a real trooper, manning the CD sales table, which was hopping all night long. Richard sold a ton of CD's. I'm not big on set lists, so perhaps another Lister will come forth on that subject. I thought Richard sounded great, but he intimated to me afterward that he didn't think the evening's performance was too terrific (in fact, he said he thought it sucked). I'm not all that crazy about this band, though they seemed to know the songs well and were fairly tight. I guess we all miss you-know-who on lead guitar, mandolin, banjo, and every other stringed instrument under the sun. Richard also talked afterward about how bad the economy is in Argentina. Perhaps there's hope that he may someday move his family back to the states. He looks remarkably thinner than I've ever seen him, and this tour is definitely wearing on him. But hey, even mediocre Richard is better than most. And he did play "Nora" after all, along with "Willin'," which I think will be on the LIVE CD. Sorry to have missed Gene Frey...my email to you went awry and you never showed up at the sales table where I was hanging out. I keep meaning to list the songs he did at Thursday's two shows at Makor, so, in no particular order (except the first two), here they are. He didn't do all these in either show, it's just a list of all the songs he played that night. The Courier Memory of You Kenworth of my Dreams Are You Happy Now Fishing Arrowhead The Next Best Western Money for Floods (I hardly ever hear him do this) Sing me Back Home Confession Abuelita You Stay Here My Love Will Follow You Wisteria Transit Sandy (which he indicated will definitely be on the Live CD) Willin' She's in Spain and I'm in Pain (a request from Vanessa!) I know RonD mentioned in his IMAC post that he's not crazy about this band, but in reality, Putnam/McDermott/Schleiffer seem to have more or less BECOME Richard's regular band, since they play with him WAY more than Larry Campbell does. >> Perhaps there's hope that he may someday move his family back to the states. He looks remarkably thinner than I've ever seen him, and this tour is definitely wearing on him. << I think it's gotta be something else, since he said on Thursday that he's only been back in the states for four days, and the IMAC show was only the third date of the tour. Maybe he just misses the home cookin'. I have never, ever seen Richard do this song before, though I had begged and begged and begged. It was so beautiful. And what a way to see it--I think John Putnam is quite a guitarist, and he and Schlieffer always added just the right extra "something" to every song. Always unobtrusive, unlike certain accordion-playing people we all know. They complemented Richard without stealing the limelight from him (also, unlike other certain accordian-playing people we all know). After all, not everyone can be Lincoln Campbell. Although that would be nice. ;-) > She's in Spain and I'm in Pain (a request from Vanessa!) mwahahaha. ;-) I definitely called it out just to be a troublemaker. Never in a million years did I think Richard would actually do it!!! And then this naysaying witch at the table next to me was like, "Uhh, there's no such song." I turned around, looked her dead in the eye, and said, "Oh, yes. There is." Little does Richard know a catfight almost broke out in the middle of the concert. LOL Just kidding!!! And then he played it! Whoo-hoo!!!!! > >> Perhaps there's hope that he may someday move his family back to the > states.
