Isn't that the reaason that some musicians as so against taping? Aside, of course from those who just hate it because they think they are losing income. I would bet that Richard would not -- in the least -- have considered his performance at the Ark a couple of weeks ago to be "on". But *I* happened to think that it was one of the finest shows I've yet seen of his and I've seen him quite a few times (though not by Greitzian standards!) despite and *because* of his mistakes. As far as sound quality, I collected Dylan bootleg tapes many, many years ago and the poor quality of many of those recordings did not diminish the power of many of his performances. [Do you think I could use the word "many" many more times in a sentence without getting many of you to get sick?!?] One of the finest recordings I have is an audience tape of Dylan singing "Abandoned Love" at (I think) the Bitter End (or was it the Other End?) just prior to the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. It is one of the most amazing performances I've ever heard -- and I wouldn't trade it for the studio version on the officially released "Bootleg Series" discs. I for one sincerely appreciate the opportunity to have it in time to give a few for Christmas 2001... And would rather have a properly polished package with attention to detail than something slapped together just to make a deadline, or worse yet -waaaaaay worse yet- hear a false promise that couldn't be delivered on. Of course, we're all eager to hear it, but let's not forget this is still a business venture for Charlie, Richard and all involved on that end- and doing things right takes time and planning, bottom line, including what time and how to hit the targeted market. Lack of the details is what can put a label like, say, Gold Castle, who had some stunning releases in the late 80's, under. I've been in advertising nearly twenty years, and we have the rule of threes- which is sort of like the circle of fifths only not so melodious: you can have it good you can have it cheap you can have it very quickly And you can usually have any two of the three put together- but you simply can't normally get all three. Doing it right takes time. This disc is something we're going to be living with and likely loving for a long time, folks. I myself would like it to be a very successful product, and i hate to refer to such a labor of love as a product, but in the end that IS what is is, y'know? My vote is for doing it right, Charlie... And I could get my girlfriend to sing you the State Song that names them all... but she'd probably kick my ass for getting it in her head again. Fast Folk alumni Eddy lawrence did one about alabama, but i can't recall what it was called- Back home, perhaps? it was on his locals disc. He's pretty cool if you ask me- anyone who does a song called sh*theads is worth a listen (now i don't trust her and she don't trust me/she goes to work when i take the dog out to pee/and we both think that's the last of the other we'll ever see... we were shhtheads...) Chicago folkie Art Thieme recorded Land of Illinois (with it's reference to abelard and helois) Red telephone does a song called pennsylvania, but that ain't folk far as i know. Isn't mary's land by mary chapin carpenter about St. Mary's co. Delaware? (No, it's not about maryland.) bill morrisey's live free or die is about new hampshire, more specifically going to jail in new hampshire gordon bok has done a lot of songs about parts of maine (specifically coastal maine) but not sure about anything that covers the whole state steve einhorn did "west virginia," on kicking mule back in the seventies. hey, this is fun! Does it have to be the entire state, or will prominent cities work? I would mention Reno Nevada as r ecorded by Iain Matthews. Come to think of it, maybe your five favorite city songs would be a good question too. jpc in sc pa uh, probably "dallas' by joe ely, "el paso" by marty robbins, ' "baltimore"by five chinese brothers, 'take me to juarez" by michael jerling... and to stretch the definition a bit, sparrows point, even though that's an area of metro baltimore, not an actual city... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 13:49:20 -0500 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" Subject: RE: [RS] state songs < Subject: RE: [RS] state songs <> I'm looking for songs that either mention the state repeatedly or are about the state in general with at least one mention of it's name. This gives a variety of approaches to what qualifies as a state song. e.g. Iowa - Iowa (Dar) - this is an obvious "name repeating" state song. Oklahoma - Shades of Grey - this is a less obvious Oklahoma song, but mentions the name and tells an Oklahoma based story. Montana - Shades of Grey - tricky choice, mentions another state repeatedly, only mentions the actual state one, but it's power as a song makes it the obvious choice. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 13:08:51 -0600 From: Buddy Brannan Subject: Re: [RS] state songs You don't mean the fifty states and capitals by Wakko Warner, do you?
