Thier guitarist, Gary Duncan tells us that the problem he has with tape trading is not that there is a potential loss of income, but that they're not "on" every night and he doesn't like to have bad performances or sound quality out there where it can ruin a listener's impression of them. Seems like a reasonable concern, given the quality of some of the live tapes I've heard of everyone from Richard to Quicksilver to the Dead. I would bet that Richard would not -- in the least -- have considered his performance at the Ark a couple of weeks ago to be "on". But *I* happened to think that it was one of the finest shows I've yet seen of his and I've seen him quite a few times (though not by Greitzian standards!) despite and *because* of his mistakes. As far as sound quality, I collected Dylan bootleg tapes many, many years ago and the poor quality of many of those recordings did not diminish the power of many of his performances. [Do you think I could use the word "many" many more times in a sentence without getting many of you to get sick?!?] One of the finest recordings I have is an audience tape of Dylan singing "Abandoned Love" at (I think) the Bitter End (or was it the Other End?) just prior to the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. It is one of the most amazing performances I've ever heard -- and I wouldn't trade it for the studio version on the officially released "Bootleg Series" discs. Yeah, that's right--I said BILLY IDOL!!! For some reason, I thought this was a bit of trivia fitting of the Richard-list. And I've been to a white wedding. And am scared by the notion of eyes without a face. Peace.
