(One of my favorite replys to this kind of question was when don mclean was asked in the 80's what american pie meant, he said it meant he didn't need to work again if he didn't want to.) Just something i thought about too... as a general rule, most of the performers discussed on this list do make time after shows for their fans, in whatever context or paramaters- and they've often been doing this for years, as you mentioned. Ya think sometimes some of the "anti-social' or elitist attitude of some of the rock stars happened simply from them getting big too fast and not learning to deal with this gracefully? Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending upon if the glass is 1/2 empty or 1/2 full) I only recently found RS and his music, and in a roundabout way: by the guitar he plays. So guitar playing (amateur) has its advantages. I'm one of those middle age guys on rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic. I live in central Mass. and was able to attend the 1st show at the Iron Horse last week, only came back down to earth in the last day or 2. Funny coincidence, I used to play Merle Haggard songs for my friend back in high school. He got arrested for having a 6 pack under his arm (caught up in a park sweep), the school administration treated him pretty shabbily, and Hag became his hero; "Branded Man," "Sing Me Back Home," "Mama Tried," etc. I look forward to discussing Richard and his fine music with you all! Now you've got me wondering which artists did these so called fans, say these rude things to? I admit I don't stay for too many of the after the show things, because I've usually traveled a ways and am anxious just to get home, but I have always seen just the opposite. All the fans I've been around, particularly Richard's, are very complimentary of the performers and express that. I am a fan of a band named Seven Nations, which has a fan base that borders on the fanatic. Interestingly enough, it included everyone from toddlers to grannies and in between. However, to even dare to say one single negative thing on their message board can get you throughly flamed. I can't imagine what would happen if you dissed on of the guys in person, but I can see the carnage now, drunk guys in kilts pummeling you with their bagpipes, grannies wacking you on the head with their purses, wee laddies and lassies kicking you in the kneecaps! Not a pretty picture. It's those folks on that island up north who are priviledged, not the continent! But I got to see Julian Dawson tonight, and he was awsome, so I am not complaining.
