In my head, I keep seeing the Sebastopol show last Summer when he played Fishing right after an unusually long intermission and he started to chuckle at "Sorry I'm late...I know how long you've had to wait..." and the audience of newbies ate it up. Vanessa, the Point show sounds like it was great. 'Friend of the Devil' must have been amazing. My favorite take on that one is by Lyle Lovett on the Deadicated disc, but it's perfect for Richard as well. And, he did 'Nora,' another favorite that I've never heard him do live. I would also love to hear 'By Now' live. It must have been so powerful. Wow. By the way, 'Please Have A Seat' is a killer title. Great call, Dave. But your non-parody title works better. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Feb 2001 02:23:39 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: [RS] more to the point Forgot to mention that Richard said "By Now" was his attempt to write a Bill Morrissey song, that he did a beautiful rendition of "Beyond the Iron Gate," that he came out with Rad and James Keelaghan for the encore (which, unfortunately, just sounded kind of messy--it was a tune that I don't know, sadly). He also did You Stay Here. I just love the attack on the "God" verse. That guitar gets me every time. Album title: "You Pay Here"? Maybe I'm inspired by Richard's tale of conversion to capitalist, mercenary, moneygrubbing, piggishness, a tale which seems guaranteed to kill sales, but what the hell. It is sort of amusing. :-) "Buy Now" seems like a good alternative title. How about, "A Cent"? As in, "What do you call $15 Canadian dollars? A cent." (Inspired by Richard's Keelaghan-inspired Canada-bashing). "The Grocer's Boon." And my favorite, "I Saw My 401K." - -- "Some recall experience/ So others can run the same road But you just write down possibilities/ So you can spend more time at home." --30 Odd Foot of Grunts, "You Treat Me Like Chocolate" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Feb 2001 02:34:38 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] The Point Good to hear some fellow Philly-area fans made it out there!!! Maybe I can unfurrow my brow and point with slightly less menace, now. Gene--I didn't know you were into astral projection. Hey, I have an album title--the live album can be called "Weather This!" (yes, _with_ the exclamation mark). It will have a picture of Richard standing on a porch in a major storm, with a (waterproofed?) guitar, singing to a small gathering of illegal immigrants. Next door will be a shuttered grocery store, and in the background? Why, the Delaware Water Gap, of course. Yeah. - --V, who realizes that Richard would probably rather gut himself than ever release an album titled "Weather This!" Oh no, that just did it. I will now go to work with a picture of Richard in a gold two-piece in my head! Thanks Ed :-) Should be an interesting day at work! Ha! Precisely what I was thinking. Man, I still remember my reaction when that hit the list. Maybe the album should just be called "Green Satin Pants" to reflect all of the changes Richard's made in the past year. > Vanessa, the Point show sounds like it was great. 'Friend of the Devil' must > have been amazing. Ooh, it was quite nice. He seemed really into it. His soul seemed to be walking in and out of the room during the show, if that makes any sense. There were moments of real intensity and moments where it just seemed obvious that poor Richard was tired and exhausted and still trying to put on a good show (which he did). Must have been rough with all the stress from recording live shows the past few nights. Also, I suspect that stress is what prompted him to play such an eclectic set--an expression of freedom to play, I suppose. :-) The fact that I heard more off-album, new (to me) stuff last night than I did at like, all of the other shows I've been to put together, says something, methinks. > My favorite take on that one is by Lyle Lovett on the > Deadicated disc, Gotta take a look at that--I do love Lyle Lovett. Man, Live in Texas is a fantastic album. :-) > but it's perfect for Richard as well. Indeed. > And, he did 'Nora,' another favorite that I've never heard him do live. I think I've seen him do it once before--yeah, just completely awe-inspiring. The song is so short, what, 3 minutes or so? Yet, it has the scope, resonance, impact, and feel of a long, deep novel. > I would also love to hear 'By Now' live. Hmm, so you say. ;-) It's CREEPY. Honestly, I really don't need to see anyone play this song again. On CD, that's one thing. But being in the room with someone like Richard, particularly, who wraps himself and covers himself in every character he creates through his music--just as he totally disappears into Mary Magdalene, or Eliza, or the Abuelita, he fully becomes this scary rapist/murderer, and it's totally unnerving. Of course, I'm a young woman barely out of adolescence, myself, so maybe I'm just being sensitive. That said, this is an achievement I'm talking about here. My goodness, I'm the biggest Nick Cave fan I know! I like a good murder ballad just as much as the next guy. But there is something about By Now that I find . . . repelling at the most basic level, even though this is a truly beautiful song, with perfectly written lyrics and perfectly constructed melody. With every other song in the set, the audience gave ready applause. By Now just sort of creeped everyone out (as well it ought...as it is supposed to). So, actually, it's not just me. I think it's a real testament to Richard's talent that one little song can make people so damned uncomfortable. It really made me feel slightly ill. Why did I get started on this tangent again? Oh--I think I just found an excuse to subject the list to my By Now rantings. This song has just been on my mind, that's all. > It must have been so powerful. I'll Say.
