I got this record early last year and found it decidedly uneven. Lynne had a country music career that sort of when through a number of stops and starts. Fed up, she moved herself to England and began playing there, finally recording the album she supposedly always wanted to make. In my view, Lynn is still undecided who she wants to be. I find her lack of style annoying. At times she sounds like Aretha Franklin, other times Madeline Peyroux. Then she gets country again, wanders back into soul, throws in a little rock and roll and adds a smidgen of folk. A hodge podge to be sure, and while this eclecticism has its virtues, in the end the residual effect is confusion and puzzlement. But there is no denying there is talent there--her voice is powerful and sultry and it stands her apart from the hordes of gals with guitars out there. Caveat Emptor is the best I could say about "I Am Shelby Lynn"--an off-putting title for an album to begin with IMO. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Dec 2000 12:51:14 From: "sharon g" Subject: [RS] FUVs top 50 David Grays cd is a fast paced rocking full of love songs lost love songs, i lost you and dont touch me again songs it had the right blend of ballads and passes my walk to, dance to, clean the house to it deep and dark and light and airy all in the same cd a great records and he has a great voice shelby lynn is allison moorers sister.( allison of the title track horse whispers fame) she put out a twangy record.she like mandy barnett keep reinventing them selves she is not country this time and found her niche in adult acoustic.. sultry YUP now she sings with shawn mullins on his new cds Emmy lou harris.. the menace who whipped up a CD of her own songs and WHO says that cover artists cant write.. i can name three. nanci griffith lucy kaplansky (wait til 2001 this new cd is gonna kick ass- larry campbell and duke levine..) and EMMY LOU.. it is a brilliant cd - the sounds are soulful and spiritual and full of her maturity.. its nice to see the nields do well in NY- even Janis ian and patty larkin ranked right in there.. all my 10 were there...
