Kris' songwriting is still in the developmental stages as is she > herself. Songs about relationships, relationships, relationships can go > only so far (despite *this* songwriter's propensity for writing them!!). I don't think you're comparing like with like here, Pat. Until Kris has recorded her fourth CD for a label, we won't *know* whether her work approaches TGW. If Appetite were up against, say, All My Heroes Are Dead, then a direct comparison would be valid. I presume that Ron's vote is based on his expectations: Dar didn't rise to them enough; Kris exceeded them. And, hey, so *what* if Kris has the most addictive smile in the whole of folk?! ;-) Having said all that, Appetite won't make my top 10 of 2000, since I got my copy in 1999! Now that line makes sense to me after all these years. >> Carol (wondering if there are some closet Hannibal Lechters on this list.... ;-) << Ron can really take my errors and carry them into the basement sometimes. Pretty darn simplistic in its message, but -- as Susan mentioned -- appropriate to the discussion at hand. RG RELATIVELY SPEAKING Words by Arthur Hancock Music by John Denver Relatively speaking, you make me who I am I need you exactly like the ocean needs the land I need you like sunshine needs the shadows and the night I need you the way love needs the savage hurtful fight Relatively sepaking, I'm nothing without you You are where I've been before, you are where I'm going to You are living out my dreams and you are all my fears You evoke my laughter, you unleash ev'ry tear The rich ones need the poor ones; the blind need those with sight Sinners need the pure of heart; the black ones need the white Relatively speaking the contrast makes it go Ev'ry action taken is related in the flow Stars and losers, kings and fools go dancing hand in hand Relatively speaking, you make me who I am The sick ones need the well ones, the living need the dead Heaven needs its hell you know, and love needs lonely beds Relatively speaking, the contrast makes it go Ev'ry action taken is related in the flow Stars and losers, kings and fools go dancing hand in hand Relatively speaking, you make me who I am ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Dec 2000 20:27:56 -0500 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] Mary Magdalen Pat wrote about "The Ballad of Mary Magdalen: >>It seemed to me that Richard based this on Nikos Kazantzakis' "The Last Temptation of Christ". (Or at least was inspired by it.) >> I would say that Richard's song is a response to Kazantzakis rather than being based on his works. _The Last Temptation of Christ_ focuses on the development of Jesus' character. He starts off as a real wimp, BTW. Mary is seen through his eyes. Richard's song is Jesus seen through Mary's eyes. BTW, when Catie Curtis opened for Dar at the Calvin, she played a song about her her hometown's church burning. The song was called (or at least had this line) "Did God let Jesus die again?" Justin Hayward's "Forever Autumn". It's from The War of the Worlds album, and if it's humanly possible to make the song even more haunting, I think Richard's voice could do it. Anybody agree? "Never Let Me Go" by Johnny Ace -- yes the same one of Paul Simon's "The Late, Great Johnny Ace". Pat ________________________ NEVER LET ME GO by Johnny Ace Just let me love you tonight, forget about tomorrow My darlin', let me hold you tight And never let me go Dry your eyes -- no tears, no sorrow Cling to me with all your might And never let me go A million times or more, dear You said we'd never part But lately I find You're a stranger in my heart Give me the rhyme In summer or in springtime To tell the world that you are mine And never let me go ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #359 ***********************************
