Why state the obvious? And can we make it 5 cds and not three? And how about a nominee for biggest disappointment? Mine for that would go to Belle and Sebastian's "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant." After so much wonderful stuff from them, I guess it was bound to happen that they would release a cd that is just ok (a few songs notwithstanding). Which, in this case, was a HUGE disappointment to me. "If You're Feeling Sinister" is just so brilliant as well as the "Lazy Line Painter Jane" eps and "Tiger Milk" that it was such a letdown to hear the meanderings of the last cd. And Dave, I *do* like Days of Open Hand but it is definitely not a great album (though I absolutely love the string arrangement on "Fifty-Fifty Chance," which does as much for that song as the strings on "Eleanor Rigby" do on it; and I do like "Men in a War." But so many other songs on there just bore me or annoy me, especially "Book of Dreams" and "Tired of Sleeping."). I agree with you that the DoOH concerts were wonderful...and I had been going to see Suzanne since the Folk City days (lordy remember Folk City?). She is quite quite entertaining and very very funny in a dry Nu Yawk kinda way. I will give DoOH another listen. DNA did a fascinating dance mix of "Rusted Pipe" by the way, similar to their remix of "Tom's Diner." I just think 99.9F deserves another listen. I know alot of people don't like Mitchell Froom's noodling but I think it works here, especially on "Blood Makes Noise," which, as a gay man, I am partial to because of its obvious AIDS metaphor. And "When Heroes Go Down" just has this wonderful groove to it. It's like this great girl group song with trenchant lyrics. I just think song for song that 99.9F is a much stronger album. I think Richard could do a wonderful cover of "Song of Sand." I do tend to the hyperbolic in my statements. So don't take me too seriously. Lord knows I try not to. LOL. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 08:37:45 EST From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] Shows and Shows In a message dated 11/29/2000 5:57:43 PM Eastern Standard Time, Vanessa writes: << So. . . my question to all of you is--who will be seeing Peter Mulvey this Friday night in NYC? I'm planning to be there! >> But Vanessa, Peter is one of about ten people lined up to perform at the Bitter End. Seems to me he may not get more than 20 minutes to play. I'd love to see him but I'm not sure it's worth the drive. Any info? By the by, this Saturday night (December 2nd) Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem will perfform at the Folk Music Society of Huntington. Things get underway at 7:30 PM with an open mic and by 8:30 Rani and the bouys will come on. The price is about $15 for nonmembers. Some of you may remember Salamander Crossing -- Arbo was the lead singer and fiddle player. I've heard an advance of this new group's CD and it's amazing, blending all sorts of style, from folk to jazz to torch singer vocals. Arbo's voice is a mazing and so is her fiddle playing, right up there with Tracy Grammer IMO. So come out if you can, it's in the the Congregation Church in Centerport, which is only about an hour from NYC. You can get directions if you need them from our website at www.exxtra.com/fmsh/homepage.html. Tonight: Slaid Cleaves at the Acoustik Cafe in Bridgeport, CT. I'm soooo tempted to make the trek. I would, subject to last minute changes, put SNP on my Top 5 (or 3 for that matter) list but I don't have it as number one. I imagine there could be some Richard Shindell fans who do not think SNP belongs in the Top 3 for the year. Are we doing top 10 or top 5? I assume the list should be annotated? Given the breadth of discussion that takes place on this list, I can just imagine the obtuse lists being compiled at this very moment. I can't wait to see them. This certainly has me thinking... > -----Original Message----- > From: Norman A. Cause once you list - - as I imagine many of us will - SNP, The Green World and The If You Lived here you'd be home by now (Nields) you have already used up three spaces! I am sure their are some other obvious ones I am missing too. Ok got to go look at my CD's! E P.S. I would also love to know a little about why you love the album in question and this would be a good time to learn about the diversity of our collections. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 18:21:41 -0500 From: "Norman A. I've decided on a top 4 because I like the CDs in the top 4 significantly more than any of the others I've bought this year and I can't think of an appropriate #5: (4) Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer -- TANGLEWOOD TREE (3) The Nields -- IF YOU LIVED HERE.... (2) Richard Shindell -- SOMEWHERE NEAR PATERSON (1) Dar Williams -- THE GREEN WORLD Richard's CD is very, very good but Dar's is better. Discovery of the year -- Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer Song of the year -- "After All", though "Tanglewood Tree" gets a special mention. This is just my opinion and I reserve the right to conduct recounts. Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #349 ***********************************
