Wow... I had no idea this was a Suzanne Vega song. I know it as done by Kate Rusby and Kathryn Roberts and, ignorantly, always assumed it was some old traditional tune. It's always been one of my favourite songs on their CD, though. I just gave Suzanne's version a listen and, of course, it sounds downright weird to me, without the British accent (harsher, somehow) but I agree it'd be a great song for Richard to do! Kerry :) NP: The Rusby/Roberts version! ------------------------------ Date: 27 Nov 2000 14:00 GMT From: Katrin.Uhl@t-online.de Subject: Re: [RS] The Queen and the Soldier Kerry confessed in regard to "The Queen and the Soldier" > Wow... Wooden Horse and Knight Moves, maybe Small Blue Thing (not sure if RS could do a song with non-person subject matter). I lost interest in Suzanne when she released Days Of Open Hand, but those first two records were amazing to me. I think Kate Rusby was on NPR the weekend before last, but I missed most of the interview. I must go buy her stuff now. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 11:15:25 -0500 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] More covers Hey you guys, While we're on the cover thread, here are a few more 'pop' songs that I'd love to hear Richard do: Driver 8 (R.E.M.) Johnson" Subject: [RS] Webb/ Campbell (Galveston) Gene suggested Richard cover "Wichita Lineman" by Jimmy Webb but made famous by Glenn Campbell. I have another Jimmy Webb song (also made famous by Glenn Campbell) that I think would be even better for Richard: Galveston. It even sounds like something Richard would write (the story of a solider waiting to return to the one he loves). Norman Galveston (words and music by Jimmy Webb) Galveston, oh Galveston I still hear your sea winds blowing While I see her dark eyes glowing She was 21 when I left Galveston Galveston, oh Galveston I still hear your sea waves crashing As I watch the cannons flashing I clean my gun and dream of Galveston I still see her standing by the water Standing there looking out to sea And is she waiting there for me On the beach where we used to run? Galveston, oh Galveston I am so afraid of dying Before I dry the tears she's crying Before I watch the seabirds flying in the sun At Galveston ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 22:22:11 -0500 From: Howie Subject: Re: [RS] The Queen and the Soldier At 02:00 PM 11/27/2000 +0000, Katrin wrote: >ah, you should hear my version, Queen and the Soldier with a German >accent, does it get any better? :-) > >err... yes, it could get better :-) : > > > but I agree it'd be a great song for Richard to do! > >okay, it's a deal then, let's talk him into singing it!
