Initially I thought some of the vocals were a bit overwhelmed by the instruments, but I don't really think that anymore. I do think Reunion Hill has some of the best songs of all, but is overproduced. Take the songs from Reunion Hill and go find somebody's live bootleg of a really good concert, now THAT's an album. Maybe 1 extra guitar and a violin. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 00:01:14 -0500 (EST) From: vcwills@Princeton.EDU (Vanessa Christina Wills) Subject: Re: [RS] Favorite Shindell CD Hmm, Well, I would have to say--my favorite is definitely Sparrow's Point, with Reunion Hill a close second. "Memory of You" and "Nora" take my breath away every time. "Kenworth of my Dreams" makes me so happy and bouncy, and I love what it's about--ignoring the naysayers and following your dream. I wonder if it's an allegory for Richard's own decision to try to make his living as a folksinger? It's kind of like his version of "Solsbury Hill," only. . . not. Blue Divide is great, I love Summer Wind, Lazy (yes, Lazy), Fishing. But I have a confession to make--something I don't think I have ever told another soul on this list. I don't like Mary Magdelene. I'm sorry--I try really hard to. I *want* to like it. But lines like, "Please excuse these rags I'm in, I've fallen on hard times," "Jesus loved me, yes I know," and "It was his career or mine" make me vaguely uncomfortable, and not even in a right-wing hyper-religious sort of way. More in a "that's cheesy" sort of way. Yes, I know some of you will say that they are clever, but there ya go, that's the problem. The song is just too darn *clever* for its own good. I really like the central problem of the song, I like its project of exploring the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. . . I just don't like the melody or the words. I think those are the only real problems in the song. Ducking for cover, Vanessa ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #338 ***********************************
