In fact, when I first heard her, that's who I thought it was. Or maybe a bit of Stacey Earle? Deb __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! It's The Nields (and actually with Dar singing backup vocals) from their album _Bob on the Ceiling_, one of my favorite cds ever. (Ooops. Maybe a poor choice of words after all the "By Now" chatter.) He was in great shape. Looks like he lost about 10 pounds since playing The Palms last March. His voice was strong, his playing was so precise that even my non-guitar playing wife commented on it ("Wow, he doesn't mess up any notes like you do") and he was in great humor. A packed and enthusiastic house helped. He played for a total of 2:15, in two sets with three encores. I took two people who had never heard him before and thought their reactions were revealing. They were really swept away. Their first comment was about how much they liked his voice -- how it works on two levels: the "sort of nasally tone" he uses when he's singing powerfully, and the very rich tone he's able to use to emphasize and punctuate the quiet, more powerful verses. They liked his humor, which got going as soon he finished opening with "Confession" and the duck thing, and then kept going with a great running ad-lib on the election. ("All this week I've felt like Nero..." "I wish they could find better people to interview in Florida...") And by the time he closed his second set with "Transit" my friends were sucked up into the depth of the songs. We talked about the plot lines the entire hour it took to drive home. His set list seemed to include everything listed at the various shows in Texas, including a surprisingly spirited and unjaded "Are You Happy," the most tender version I've heard yet of "Reunion Hill," and the quintessentially creepy "By Now." (What's beyond quintessential? Sextessential?) (Quick aside: First time I ever saw Richard play, back in 92 or 93 in an art gallery in Carmel, a drunken hobo wandered in from the street, mid-set. The guy made a minor scene at the back of the hall, trying to swipe cookies off the refreshment table while Richard sang. Then, in the middle of "By Now," the guy started staggering out of the room. Richard timed the chorus perfectly, waving and singing "by now" to the hobo, who was completely oblivious to the fact all 15 of us were watching.) Audiences at The Palms are not often quick to offer standing ovations, but all leapt to their feet at the end of his regular set Saturday. I think he's created a buzz worth building on here in Northern California. After the show, Richard held court for some of us, talking about the move to Argentina and the general weirdness of going back and forth. The abrupt changes of both climate and culture are a shock, he said, particularly the fast pace and the astonishing wealth in the States... He also said he's writing "a lot" and it shouldn't take him long to have enough for another album. lee ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 20:30:40 -0800 From: patrick t power Subject: Re: [RS] Kasey Chambers RonG wrote: <> She'll be on Letterman next week -- Monday, November 20.
