The song it reminds you of (and trust me, this *is* the one) is the Turtles' "You Showed Me," which was written by Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. You remember, the one that goes like this . . . All I can say is that Norman shares this phenomenon with Alan Pepper of the Bottom Line, who is _convinced_ it is a cover song. - -- Charlie, who thinks "Tanglewood Tree" sounds like a Jethro Tull song ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2000 08:38:00 -0700 From: Lee Wessman Subject: [RS] RS and Nields But Richard doesn't do any numbers with the Nields and or vice versa that I am aware of. I wish they would. Has anyone seen them do anything together? When CryCryCry first toured a few years ago, the Nields sisters opened in Petaluma. They came up to join in with harmonies on a couple of numbers -- the REM song, as I recall, and another. With those five voices, the whole danged thing was exquisite. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2000 15:52:11 EDT From: Gf212121@aol.com Subject: [RS] I thought a shell covered a turtle Hey you guys, Norman pondered:: << One of the albums I received is Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer's TANGLEWOOD TREE. Ron G. told us that when Dave and Tracy were on the Vin Scelsa show Vin played the Turtles song, so I guess he agrees. Norman, when you get past the title track, 'The Mountain' is absolutely great, and 'Hey Conductor' is a hoot (and a holler). Not a weak cut on the CD. Their first, 'When I Go,' is nearly as good, but not quite as consistent. By the way, I just got 'Big League Babe,' the Christine Lavin tribute. Richard's cover of 'Fly on a Plane' is sort of different for him, but I like it. Actually, the first time I heard it was when WFUV played it as part of their 'Under the Covers' bit between the time I ordered the CD and received it. Now that's a coincidence. Sorry to interrupt the D&T list with this inane Richard Shindell stuff. Gene F. (who is not telling you who he's voting for, and doesn't care who you are, either. The link below will deliver you there, except it may be long to set up properly in an e-mail. You may have to cut-and-paste this link, or just go to www.cdnow.com and find the Turtles 20 Greatest Hits disc. They will have a Windows Media Player sample of 'You Showed Me.' http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1330233231/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/albu m.html/artistid=TURTLES/itemid=331591 Are there any Richard songs that really evoke another song that came before it? I'm trying to think of some, but none come right to mind. Anybody? Gene F. (who suddenly has a craving for Bookbinders' Snapper Soup. Ok guys and girls: Put *down* the crack pipe. I just listened to it. I don't see the connection (at least in the 30 seconds alloted). But, Gene, thanks for pointing out this Windows-friendly version that my computer would actually play. I now believe, however, that 'You Showed Me' is a rip off of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone". Ok, I have never mentioned this to the list before, but when I first got SNP the song My Love will Follow You absolutely drove me crazy and I couldn't figure out why. Well it turns out that there is a song with a very similiar melody - at least to my ear. I have heard this song cause my roomates sister sang it in church and we have a recording of it. So I asked her - who's song is this? And she said.... HANSON! The song is called I Will Come to You. Something about the way they sing I Will Come to You sounds very similiar to the line I Will Follow You. Now I am not suggesting that the The Miller's were influenced by Hanson. No flames please. Just a funny thing. If any of you are masochists or have teens I am sure you could easily find Hanson's song. I actually think it is quite pretty and I am told by my fanatical teen friend that they do write their own music and play their own intruments. I just wish I had heard I Will Follow You First! And no I am not a closet Hanson fan. Now Duran Duran, that's a whole different matter..... E I Will Come To You (I. Hanson/T. Hanson/Z. Hanson/B. Mann/C. Weil) When you have no light to guide you And no one to walk to walk beside you I will come to you Oh I will come to you When the night is dark and stormy You won't have to reach out for me I will come to you Oh I will come to you Sometimes when all your dreams may have seen better days And you don't know how or why, but you've lost your way Have no fear when your tears are fallin' I will hear your spirit callin' And I swear I'll be there come what may (Repeat Chorus) 'Cause even if we can't be together We'll be friends now and forever And I swear that I'll be there come what may When the night is dark and stormy You won't have to reach out for me I will come to you Oh I will come to you We all need somebody we can turn to Someone who'll always understand So if you feel that your soul is dyin' And you need the strength to keep tryin' I'll reach out and take your hand (Repeat Chorus) © 1997 Jam 'N' Bread, administered by Heavy Harmony Music (ASCAP)/Dyad Music Ltd.
