Johnson" Subject: [RS] David Wilcox w/ Jennifer Kimball @ Iron Horse This post has little or no Richard content but I think some of you may be intrerested. I just saw David Wilcox, one on RonG's "guitar heroes" at the Iron Horse. Jennifer Kimball opened. Interestingly, she started with "Long Way Home" ("you're a highway with no exits"), the single of her CD and her best known song. More interestingly, she skipped ahead on the song and then had trouble getting back. She made several comments while singing the chorus ("It's a long way home, but I only live 2 hours away, how could I mess up this song"). While Jennifer was introducing one of her songs, a guy at the front table, the one next to mine, started talking to her about "sounding from New York". Not a "soy bomb" incident. It was David Wilcox himself. At the intermission, the woman sitting next to me, and even closer to David, said she almost had a heart attack when David sat down. David seemed to be really enjoying Jennifer's short set, which after the "Long Way Home" fiasco, turned out just fine. Jennifer has a new song, "Back of my hand", that has lyrics "heavily borrowed" from lines in _The English Patient_. David played for about an hour and a half, some songs from his very new album, some from his second album, HOW DID YOU FIND ME HERE [1], and some from albums in between. The most amazing part was when he said that he wanted to make up a song. He asked for volunteers. He asked if anyone was going through a difficult time or had to make a difficult decision. Some guy in the back said he was about to buy a house. David kept pressing him for details: "What are you afraid of? Where's the house? Is it commitment that you are worried about? It was just so funny. Then David played the song, making it up as he went along. This guy is amazing. Oh, and after the song was over, he gave a copy of the new CD to the guy. Jennifer played on a few of the songs. She, like Lucy, is a great harmony vocalist. For his encore, David said he could play two things; he asked if people wanted to hear a song about death. The audience said "no". David said "too bad. The death song was "Eye of the Hurricane". He played "How did you find me here" instead. David is a great guitar player and lyricist like Richard and he has quiet charisma reminiscient of that of another singer-songwriter with initials DW. You should all go out and see him [2]. Norman [1] Ron, refresh my memory, just what is David's first album? You told me once. Since I don't have it, the name is not in my memory. I saw him twice last year, and at one of those shows he was sitting in the audience like you describe here, but he didn't heckle the opener. :-) After the guy was done, David walked right up to him and said "WOW!" It was a local artist, Jason Wilbur, and David just went on and on with him about the show, took one of his CDs, etc. Then when he went to play, he said, "Wow. I didn't know JASON was opening for me. I mean, I knew someone was opening, but I didn't know it was JASON. Have you guys heard Jason before? Isn't he great?" And by the way, Jason *is* pretty great. :-) You can get his CDs at CDNow. Norman, I know Ron's out there somewhere and will answer this for you too probably, but David's first CD was "The Nightshift Watchman". Sorry, just in case any of you were rushing out to buy one of his CDs, it's Jason Wilber, not Wilbur. Jennifer played a Julie Miller (good friend of RS) song "Take Me Back". Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #280 ***********************************
