I'm not sure if I can WEATHER it. I'll have to let you know WEATHER or not later." It's really a combination of bribery and annoyance. I've found Richard very easy to annoy and I have never really even tried - guess it is just a gift of mine. Speaking of annoying Richard I think the list should get together and encourage Pat to share the story he shared with me off-list yesterday, it was quite humorous. - -----Original Message----- From: Rongrittz@aol.com [mailto:Rongrittz@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2000 6:08 AM To: shindell-list@smoe.org Subject: Re: [RS] SOBSOB << you have never heard him play Howling at the Trouble? If I want to hear 'The Weather' live, polite requests and gentle prodding aren't going to get the job done. Begging, badgering, bribery, annoyance, duplicity, and a white toga and wooden staff, THAT'S what I need. Hey, I'm just the guy to do it. Make it a king-size toga. Hey Ron, did Dave and Tracy make you jump through all these hoops to hear 'Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love?' Gene F.(who likes the original seven deadly sins better then Gandhi's. I called our local paper yesterday to let the entertainment editor know that our concert series had a group cancel their appearance with us next month due to a serious illness. Since I knew that "newish-mom" Michaela O'Brien (Richard's publicist) had arranged for an interview with him and Richard, I asked him if he'd mention the cancellation at the article's end. Well, he told me that he had lost Richard's phone number the day he was supposed to call him, so the interview never happened. I asked him if he'd like me to track Richard down for him so that he could do at least *something* by tomorrow and he said, "Sure." *Some* press is better than *no* press . . . right? (The paper's circulation is probably between 100,000 and 200,000, so I figured it was worth the effort.) I called the ever-personable Michaela to see what we could do and she was quite aghast that neither the writer called her to let her know what had happened or that Richard (who had the writer's phone number) hadn't attempt to connect either. Michaela said that Richard was in Montreal and that because it was 11:00am I'd better call him quickly as it was probably close to check-out time. The operative word here is "probably." The clerk, after taking a minute or two, patched me through to Richard who answered after one ring. "Great!" I thought. His voice, however, didn't sound as if he'd been awake long. He hadn't been . . . because I WOKE HIM UP!!! I never imagined that my hard work and dedication as a volunteer would create a life-threatening situation for myself!! He's gonna hit me . . . I just know it!! And I don't have my thirteen-year-old daughter here to protect me!! That was Isabel and me. Good memory, Pat. Actually, not many people request it. It's just Isabel and me, over and over again, in one of our various disguises. Most people request sure things like 'Confession' or 'Wisteria' in deference to their innate fear of rejection. What is the quintessential RS song? Note this doesn't necessarily mean your favorite Richard song. My favorite song of Richard's is "Nora" but the one that captures his essence is "The Ballard of Mary Magdalen". It's tender, has a religious theme, is about someone much maligned. It's also a song about someone who could not obviously be Richard himself. They're not the greatest seats (third row from the back, to the side), but this is a sold-out show. I'm asking the price on the tickets, $25 each. "Nora" is right up there, in my mind. "On A Sea Of Fleur De Lis", while a wondrous song, is one of the one-of-a-kind songs that Richard will likely never duplicate, and because of its uniqueness probably doesn't quite qualify as quintessential. Hmmm . . . I think I'd be more inclined to go with either "Reunion Hill" or "The Next Best Western" -- the former because of its story-song style *and* because of the cross-gender point-of-view; the latter because of (similar to Norman's thoughts) the religious aspects which he weaves into the ordinariness of paying a toll on the highway.
