I tried the SEARCH function in the RS-list archives to try and find the earliest reference to the song. It indicates that the song's been mentioned 100 times, and the earliest one it shows is from August '98, which is a year after the release of "Reunion Hill." So that's all I can tell from that source. RG ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 10:45:17 -0400 From: Kerry Bernard Subject: [RS] I had a moment... This was priceless. I'm driving to work this morning and, as I flip through the radio stations, I come upon WUMB playing "Fishing". I start to sing along and, as I approach a somewhat clogged intersection, I'm belting, "If you get the chance, you should try to get up to Lake Michigan..." At this point, I glance to my left and, in the lane coming towards me at an equally slow pace, there is a woman, blissfully singing the exact same line. I saw her before she saw me and, of course, I started grinning. She must have sensed that she was being watched because she looked over, saw me, we both kept singing, we both laughed, and on we went. It was pretty darn funny. Just had to share. Kerry :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 11:24:22 -0400 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" It's like their singing: If you get the chance you should try to go jump in Lake Michigan and then maybe jump in again anyway... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 11:38:00 -0400 From: "Michael O'Hara" Subject: [RS] *sigh*...Toronto, finally!! Well...I need not travel 10 hours on a bus to see Richard this time around. He's practically playing in my own backyard!! He's playing at a small place called the Tranzac Club this Thursday...which isn't even really a club, it's more like a meeting hall or something. It's a very small room...I'm bringing along about 8 or 9 of my Richard-converts that I've worked on over the past 3 years...all of them are just as excited as I am... Anyways...just wanted to share my excitement and say hi to everyone I met at the Bottom Line in April. I lurk too much on this list...I really should jump in to these threads more... See ya... Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 11:47:36 -0400 From: "Meg Hart-Smith or Chris Smith" Subject: [RS] calling the moon from start to finish Cross-posted to Dar & Richard lists: My weekend of music started off and ended with Dar's song Calling The Moon, sung on Thursday night in Burlington VT by Dar herself, then encoring Richard Shindell's Sunday night show here in Burlington with his haunting rendition. So throw away all of those old posts about discord between the C3 gang and let's celebrate both Dar's and Richard's versions! Charlotte and Elizabeth have already posted the Burlington setlist but I have to echo just how engaging Dar was. She was clearly excited about the new tour and her between song chat was great. Maybe having an assistant to tune her guitars gave her more time to focus on the stories she was telling - so funny! Sandra from Montreal sat next to me and took scrupulous notes (thanks again!!) on Dar's stories but I hope everyone will go out and here them live, if possible. (At my house, the operative phrase this weekend was "strawberries, in January?") I can't say enough good things about Dar's band on this tour - they complement her without overshadowing her vocals or the songs themselves. Definitely no egos among this group. Steuart Smith was clearly entertained and amused by Dar's stories (I hope this continues once he's heard them all a dozen or more times!). I'd love a live recording of this band doing both Better Things and As Cool As I Am ('cause the digereedoo on the original spoils it for me). Throughout the performance I felt I was witnessing an older, wiser, more confident Dar - ready for the fame that's on her way. Saturday night I saw Peter Mulvey as part of the Mad River Unplugged Series in Waitsfield VT. Peter played without his frequent sidekick Goody Goodrich -- and while I missed their incredible instrumental harmony, Peter related to the audience so much more solo. His first set contained several songs from his newest album and many older ones, but his second set, "songs I love" -- alternating his songs and covers was fabulous. His version of Dar's The Ocean continues to knock me out. Peter's intelligent songwriting and soulful singing are not to be missed! Sunday night I was feeling pretty tired from my nights out but knew that seeing Richard would be worth the effort. If only all Sunday night shows could start at 7 (or even start on time at 8!). Anne Weiss opened and while she has a beautiful voice, her songs didn't thrill me. After another long break, Richard finally came out and the night was made. He looked great - trim, tanned and rested. He says he's trying to quit smoking, a habit that's increased due to the Argentinean culture which smokes everywhere. Richard was solo, unlike his earlier weekend gigs. Richard mixed new songs with old including Castaway, Kenworth of my Dreams, & Fishing. He had planned to do Sing Me Back Home as his encore put changed his mind, switched guitars and did Calling the Moon. I can now fully appreciate both versions but Richard's would still be my favorite. I'm looking forward to a few nights free to process all of the great music I've seen this week. If these guys are playing near you, go see 'em. If not....move! She sorta reminds me of a cross between Dar and Ani - Dar's humor and songwriting and Ani's guitar... I just love her. but I need people to come!! here are the details: Sunday, Sept 24 at 7pm Gilroy CA tix $8-12 (sliding scale) so if anyone is interested in coming to my house for some good music on Sunday, please e-mail me :) oh and you'll get to see my cool autographed SNP poster :) Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 12:11:53 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] calling the moon from start to finish >> Richard mixed new songs with old including Castaway, Kenworth of my Dreams, & Fishing. I remember much the same thing. He played it at the Friday night song swap, saying, "This is the first time I've played this," and had a lyric sheet in front of him. Then Gorka said, "This is a new song of mine," turned the lyric sheet his way, and started playing a totally different version. :-} 'later, jeff. - -- Take these words, from my heart. He played it at the Friday night song swap, saying, "This is the first time I've played this," and had a lyric sheet in front of him. >> I know I've probably talked about this a million times before, but one of the things that I've enjoyed most about having followed Richard as closely as I have (I mean, I have a Secret Decoder Ring AND an RS Stalker Membership Card) is that I've had the chance to see and hear early versions of many of his songs. And I love the fact that he's willing to unfold a lyric sheet, tape it to the microphone stand, or have someone in the front row hold it for him, and treat us to some "works in progress." While it seems that "Abuelita" emerged, fully formed, during an airplane flight (he has said that the only way he could remember the tune was to remind himself that part of the melody was lifted from the Beatles' "Eight Days a Week"), I remember hearing "Reunion Hill" performed the week he wrote it (lyric sheet and all) . . . before subsequent revisions resulted in "A" sections turning into "B" sections, "B" sections into "A" sections, and a reprise of the bridge section being deleted. Several of us were at the Turning Point early last year when he debuted "The Grocer's Broom" and "Spring" (which didn't even have a name at the time), and a few list members have told of hearing him perform "Transit" when the second half of the song wasn't even done. And of course, my favorite story is of having heared "Money for Floods" in early '97, when it was a completely different song, about a mother and daughter (still named Eliza and Louise) from Richmond, Virginia, dealing with a particularly harsh winter. I know it's early, but I'm very much looking forward to hearing new stuff, and hearing how the time in Argentina will affect his writing style. Maybe the live CD that Charlie Hunter referred to might include a new song. That would be a real treat . . .
