I think this is, maybe, my second post but I've been on for a couple of months. I have a favor to ask. Could someone who's going to see Richard soon pick up a copy of SNP for me? I haven't had the money to get it till now when I saw him at FRFF, and I couldn't make it to the Bottom Line the other night because I had to rehearse for a play I'm directing, and I want to buy it from him and not elsewhere so he'll get the bigger cut. So I'm willing to pay postage above the cost, in order to do that. If someone could do that for me, please let me know. I'm in NYC. Thanks very much in advance, Rachel "We find magic everywhere" - Dar Williams. * * * * * * * * * Rachel Rubin Ladutke, Playwright, Director * Read my ongoing Playwright's Notebook for my new work-in-progress, CLARY'S EXODUS! * The URL is: http://www.aviar.com/snsnotes/ and you can send me comments on it by following the link at the bottom of that page. I know this is the Richard Shindel List (though someone would have us believe it doubles for the Carter & Grammer List), but I just feel so compelled to tell everyone that my House Concert featuring the great Jack Williams this past Friday night was nothing short of amazing. I strongly urge anyone on this List who has the chance to see Jack Williams perform, even if it's 100 miles driving distance, just do it. We've all talked about how much we love Richard's guitar playing, how it's an integral part of his talent and showmanship. Well, I have to say, Richard could learn a ton from Jack. He did things I've never seen before (how about changing tunings in the same song, with a just a twist of a peg or two, going from one to another and then back again, all within the same song!!!). He is a fantastic showman, funny and amusing on stage and just the nicest person to chat with afterward (since he stayed in our guest room over night, I got to plug him with geeky questions over breakfast the next day). His new CD on Wind River Records is "Etermity and Main" and it's fabulous. I especially alert people who love Cliff Eberhardt to check Jack Williams out as well. He is truly special. Sorry for using this forum to rave about Mr. Williams. But Jack is a wonderful guy and deserves a wider audience. We now take you back to your regularly scheduled Folk Singer List. I am a dreadful correspondent, since I never do compile a set list for these outings so I'll do my best to recall the high points; needless to say, it was a great evening. First of all, I called the main number for the Berrie Center listed on Dirty Linen, and amazingly enuf, it was the direct line for the director, so I naturally congratulated her on booking RS.......the scope of their concert series seems like a very wide net indeed, a little of this and a little of that, but she assured me that they plan on having at least one folk performance per season........I suggested Dar, Lucy, or Cheryl Wheeler as future possibilities. In any event, the venue itself is a small theater located in the Berrie Center, at Ramapo College in Mahwah (named for Russ Berrie, manufacturer of Russ toys and stuffed animals, he and his wife are benefactors for a number of institutions in NJ). This is the second year of the concert series. John Platt of WFUV was the emcee for the evening, introducing Jess Klein, and later on, Richard. (there is another member drive slated for later this fall, so that is my little plug for FUV........) Opening was Jess Klein, with whom I have very little experience, she opened with "Ireland" and played "Little White Dove" and several other selections.......I suppose I would say I am not a Jess Klein fan so for all of you that are, I am sorry I am not a better reporter, but those are the songs that stay in my mind.....she has a very engaging manner, and was delighted when a couple of audience members indicated they had caught her interview on FUV earlier in the day. After her set, RS and band were introduced, for this evening the band was comprised of John Putnam on guitar, and Radislov Lorkovic on piano and accordion. My friend Nadia was delighted with Rad: "wow! a nice Ukrainian boy!" (always happy to listen to a fellow Ukie), but I explained this was an extra bonus for her since I had no clue he would be there, I was assuming it would be John and Lincoln. They played several songs, then there was a short intermission, and then they returned to play the final half........here are some of the songs that were performed, I know there are several that are eluding me at the moment.......... Confessions Kenworth of My Dreams Next Best Western a cover song he played at the Mansion, which I shall entitle "The Hobo Song" since I don't know the real name Are You Happy Now Arrowhead You Stay Here Abuelita Wisteria Mary Magdalene Cold Missouri Waters (I love his rendition of this song, he was quite amusing while giving credit to James Keelaghan, commenting that Canadians are great with a disaster song.......) Transit (a big NJ favorite!!!!!!!!!!) and the encore was that prison tune, which I shall call Sing Me Back Home, (I'll attribute it to Merle Haggard) I was surprised at how young Rad was, I guess I was expecting an older guy, I would say if he is 25 that would be stretching it. Hugely talented, and has three CDs out on his own, so be on the lookout for them........... And as usual, a pleasure to hear John Putnam. And twice in one month for me, so that was a real treat. We are all fans of Richard Shindell, and I believe that from this common ground we should all share music and artists that we think others may like. It would be a pretty dry conversation if we couldn't expand the parameters a bit. But not Dave and Tracy. Enough about them. I mean, they're great singers and players, and Dave is an incredible songwriter, but so what? Who cares that they've got two amazing CDs out there, or that they're genuinely nice people? Maybe Ron G., but not me. I intend to confirm all this at their Nov. 17 show in Princeton, N.J. Jack is an incredibly talented guitarist, a wonderful songwriter, and has a voice that one of my friends describes as "a cross between honey and sandpaper" - his between-song chatter is amusing and engaging, and his knowledge of music history is incomparable. He was a headliner at our South Florida Folk Festival two years ago, has made a point to visit us every few months since then for house concerts/workshops/tributes, and he'll be back by popular demand in 2001 - check out our website (southfloridafolkfest.com) for a short blurb on him and the other featured artists in our 10th annual event. Better yet, come on down! - South Florida in January... enough said... :-) Susan "if you think of this girl and the dreams that made her, write our secrets on hornet nest paper and blow it high across the border" O Canada Girls - Dar Williams ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 23:11:36 -0400 From: "L. Davis" Subject: [RS] Converts Isn't it fun when you get someone else interested in richard's music (or for that matter, other music you care about)? Just yesterday I went to the Eli Whitney Folk Festival in New Haven and met a woman who'd heard Richard for the first time at the Yale Div. school, known to me in other contexts, and she confessed she had since then (a) bought all the CDs, (b) even a T-shirt, and (c) gone to the Bottom Line concert (she said the sound was awful). I.e., complete conversion. OK, come to think of it I can't take credit for that one! :) but anyway tonight, a call from an old law school pal who is now defending minor criminals outside Boston since he couldn't survive solely on first amendment cases, I sent him a tape 3 years ago because he's the only actual former truck-driver personally known to me, for a verdict on "Kenworth of my Dreams," and he was calling to say he'd just been to hear Richard in I think Lexington, had to argue his way in to the sell-out show, and it was terrific. Maybe it's because I don't have any involvement with organized religion, but I do find this proselytizing fun. lisa ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #260 ***********************************
