I say to Isabel 'I think that was Lincoln Schleifer.' We both say 'nah,' or words to that effect, knowing that Richard had a show in Mahwah, NJ. Well, apparently it wasn't a full band show, since Lincoln was, indeed, playing bass for Buddy and Julie, as half of a terrific rhythm section with Brady Blades. The show was very good. I won't go into too much detail, since this is the Dave and Tracy (I mean Richard) list, but if you have the evening free, they're back there tonight (Saturday). It's almost worth the price of admission just to watch Julie Miller play the wastebasket. So, any Mahwah reviews forthcoming? Although the Mahwah show was literally ten minutes from my office, by the end of the day yesterday I was still drained from Thursday night's 2:00 in the morning, double-show emotion-fest. So I skipped it. Yes, Ron skips a Richard show. Does this mean that I have to turn in my Secret Richard Shindell Decoder Ring? BTW, the second show Thursday night was not very different from the first show, except for the fact that after a sold-out early show, there were no more than 50 people there for the second . . . which affected the energy in the room right away. Anyway, in speaking to Dave Carter between sets (I had to thank him for ripping my heart out with the "Kate" dedication in the first show), he said that they were going to substitute "Walkin' Away From Caroline" for "Cat-Eye Willie," and asked what I thought of that. I told him that "Willie" was a great showcase for Tracy, and he kind of smiled and said yeah, that they'd keep it. So that was great, and they did a terrific job through the same five-song set as the first show. Richard played mostly the same set as the first show. The only differences that I recall -- except for the obvious fact that Lucy wasn't there -- were that he didn't play "Reunion Hill," and that he added "Sitting on Top of the World" and an absolutely rocking version of "Arrowhead," featuring some incredible drumming by Denny McDermott. Oh, and one other thing, as if I needed to get my heart beat up any more. Halfway through the set he asked the band to leave the stage, and invited a friend up from the audience, Greg Anderson from the group Whirligig, to join him on "a song from my first record that I don't play much anymore." Greg had a mandolin, and since I couldn't recall any mandolin parts on "Sparrows Point," I didn't have a clue what song they were going to do, although someone in the audience asked for "On a Sea of Fleur-de-Lis," which I would have been thrilled to hear. Instead, he did "You Again." This is a very important song to me these days, and the heart that I'd finally managed to fit back into my chest after having heard "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love" twice already that night, once again poured out onto a Bottom Line table. Whew. Double whew. Maybe that's another reason I skipped Mahwah last night. A guy can only take so much, y'know? That's great news! Other than that I'm afraid I can't come up with much of substantial content this Sunday morning... :-) Katrin - -------------------------------------------------------- - If I didn't dream I'd be dead - Peter Mulvey (all in good fun) ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #259 ***********************************
