["Batgirl of the Night" Subject: [RS] Hello everyone, just wanted to say I had the pleasure of seeing Larry Campbell play with Bob Dylan in Dublin last night. I know many of you have probably seen both tese artists before but I was really amazed to see and hear Larry's magic on the guitar and fiddle. Great stuff! I can't wait to see him play with RS someday. Just one thing that I could'nt figure out. If Larry is playing with Bob he's obviously one of the most talented and vesatile musicians. I know Richard's fan base is expanding at a nice rate but surely Larry's contributions to SNP etc come at a high price? We were sitting next to Ron G., and while he may have seemed cool on the outside, when Dave dedicated 'Kate' to him, and then they did such a killer performance, he was an absolute tower of goo. My only regret was not stopping at Duane Reade for the smelling salts. By the way, Dave Carter made an effort to come around and say hello to as many people as possible before and after the show, and was very gracious and friendly. While I didn't get a chance to speak to Tracy, she was out there as well. I feel comfortable in removing them from evil interloper status. Nancy hit the general feeling about Jess Klein right on the head. The set was fine, but I think most of the crowd would have been much happier if Dave and Tracy went ten minutes longer, and Richard started ten minutes earlier. Richard came out dressed in black khakis and a brown plaid shirt. Amazing. His set was excellent. It was basically the same set list as Sunday at the Mansion, with 'Sin City' replacing the Elmore James tune. He had mentioned on Sunday that there would be a Doctor in the house for the 7:30 show, and there she was. Adding Lucy (who had a funny comment about Richard's new look being good for him) and Rad Lorkovic to the three players (John Putnam, Lincoln Schleifer, and Denny McDermott) he has been playing with makes for an absolute kick-butt band. 'Next Best Western,' 'Kenworth,' and 'Sing Me Back Home' were all as good as they get, even with Lucy racing on stage in the middle of 'Sing Me Back Home' at Richard's request. The highlight was Lucy taking the lead on 'Mary Magdalene.' Now I needed the smelling salts. After the show, Isabel and I tried to count up the number of versions of this song we've heard live, and came up with: Cry3 Richard solo Richard w/Lucy Lucy w/Richard (The sultry version) Lucy solo (The angry version) I have now heard more different versions of this song than anything but the Star Spangled Banner. Is it just me, or are there sound problems at every Bottom Line show? Tracy seemed to have feedback problems, and Richard was obviously distracted by feedback during 'You Stay Here.' Lucy and Rad also had some issues. It was good to meet Renee and Adam after the show. All in all, a great night. Gene F. Good morning to all! Well, I must start by saying that yesterday was definitely a fabulous day to be a Dar/Richard/Lucy fan! I was lucky enough to get to chat with Dar for a few moments on WFUV's live online chat! It was wonderful for me to have the opportunity to finally thank Dar for inspiring me to stay strong and remember just how many of us have suffered through severe depression. I had such a warm, content feeling come over me as she told me how thrilled she was that I made it through, etc. It was truly an amazing afternoon. Those of you that were a part of the live chat will know exactly what I mean. As if that weren't enough for one day, I then went to see Richard Shindell at the Bottom Line! I was a little late arriving, so when I got there Dave Carter & Tracy Grammar were already performing. I'm not sure how many songs I missed but here are the ones I heard: "Crocodile Man", "When I Go", "Kate & The Ghost of Lost Love". They did a song after Crocodile Man, but I am not sure of the title. They were amazing! "Kate & The Ghost of Lost Love" is an incredibly beautiful song, I especially loved when Dave & Tracy sang their own part of the song simultaneously. They each were singing different lyrics but the harmony blended together in perfect unison-WOW!! Next, Jess Klein took the stage. I had heard her earlier in the day when she did a few songs live on WFUV. She was even better in person, she has a great sound. Her voice kind of reminded me of Sheryl Crow. Here is her set of songs(I apologize if the song titles are not correct, she didn't announce each title so I had to guess on a couple): "I Sure Would" "Ireland", "Little White Dove", "Love Is Where You Find It", "I Believe", "I Tried". The audience loved her and made her feel very welcome. Now, onto Mr. Shindell! He opened the show with "Confession". In my opinion the band was very loud on this song, they were overpowering his vocals. It seemed as if he were straining to be heard over the music. Maybe it's just me, but I love his voice most of all so when the music is too loud the song suffers a bit. Next was "Abuelita", which was fabulous. Then Richard announced that a special friend of his was in the audience and invited her up to sing with him. Yes, it was none other than our beloved Lucy Kaplansky!! It was a delight for all of us!!!! He sang "Kenworth Of My Dreams" with Lucy on harmony-once again I say "WOW!!" They also sang "Next Best Western" together-"TERRIFIC!" Lucy went back and sat with us in the audience. Richard said we were very lucky that Lucy was there and that she would not be for the second show of the evening. He was right, we were VERY lucky!! He went on to do an incredible version of "Wisteria". His voice was intense, more so than usual. Next he did a cover of a Peter Rowan (forgive me if the spelling is incorrect) song "Gambling Man". Well, I wasn't too familiar with the song but how shall I say..it kicked ass!! His next two songs were "You Stay Here" and "Fishing". Unfortunately there was feedback during both songs, it was apparent that Richard was getting annoyed. I can't say I blame him, these are great songs, and to have them tainted with feedback is a shame! As he sang "Reunion Hill" the feedback problem was finally eliminated and things were back on track! Well, much to my delight, he called Lucy back on stage. She said her mom was also in the audience. She sang "Ballad of Mary Magdalene", she sang lead and Richard joined in on the chorus. It was so beautiful I can hardly put it into words!! Lucy had left the stage for a second and when she returned Richard asked where she went. She said she had to fix her lipstick, it had smudged. Richard said in a joking way, "But why, that was a good look for you!" Lucy just kind of said "Thanks Richard", with a smirk on her face and a sarcastic tone in her voice. It was a funny moment. Next they sang a request from the audience, "Sin City". She also sang harmony with him on one of my favorites, "Are You Happy Now". It was one of the best versions I have ever heard!! Richard did "Transit" solo with the band. For his encore he called Lucy back on stage AGAIN and they did "Sing Me Back Home". It was awesome to say the least!!! The band was excellent. He had a female piano/accordion player(I don't remember her name but she rocks!), Lincoln Schaefer on bass, John Putnam on guitar and Dylan McDermott on drums. Well, after the show as I hung around and finally got to meet/chat with Gene and Ron G. of the list, I noticed I was standing right next to the table that Lucy K. was sitting at with her mom. I thought of sitting down and chatting with her but I decided to let her be, she really seemed to be enjoying the time with her mom. Family time is definitely more important than me just rambling on about how much I love her music! Well, that's all folks. I think I can say this on behalf of the entire audience- A Good Time Was Had By All!!!! I hope those of you that were not lucky enough to be there will enjoy this review, I tried my best to give you all the details so you will feel as if you were there! Take care everyone! *Basking in the post show after glow!*** Renee Polgar _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
