So, last week we discussed "Waiting for the Storm," about a guy sitting and 
waiting to face the wrath of God.  In "You Stay Here," we've got a guy not 
willing to sit and take it . . . in fact, one who -- after he gets his wood, 
his food, his clothing and his weapons -- is going out to grab God by the 
back of his collar (does God wear collared shirts?) and drag him back to see 
what he's done to his family and his country.

I first heard Richard do this song at the Fez "Soy Bomb" show, and I'll admit 
that it didn't make much of an impression on me at the time . . . songs 
rarely grab me on first listening (although "Wisteria" is a notable 
exception).  It wasn't until I heard it a few more times that the power of it 
started to sink in.  I think it's the "coats" verse that first nailed me.  I 
had never really given it much thought, then I read a review which surmised 
that the coats were being taken from dead bodies, and that the snow was being 
used to clean off the blood.  And all of a sudden the song scared the living 
crap out of me.

But mostly, this song underscores the the incredible strength found in most 
of Richard's characters.  The strong-willed Civil War widow.  The quiet 
dignity of the fisherman and the grocer and Abuelita.  The brave courier.  
The determination of William Taylor and the fugitive in "May."  And now this 
guy.

Anyway, as great as this song is on SNP or when performed with a band, I love 
when Richard does it solo.  Yeah, there's that inhuman flatpicking, but I 
love the way the song builds in intensity, climaxing at the "God" verse where 
Richard just starts banging away, practically spitting out his anger at the 
way God has treated the protagonist. 

Well, that's *my* take on it . . .

Nope. It was 'Arrowhead.' I've never heard or seen mention of 'Ascent' done live either. Or 'The Weather,' but that's just a personal note. Sorry.

The 6:30 mansion show was, as Paul noted, very good. I kind of thought it would be a bit more 'intimate' than a Turning Point or Brokerage show, but 60 is still a lot of people to get up close and personal with, so I guess my expectations were a bit out of whack. In any case, they sounded great. John Putnam did a great job, abd Lincoln did some cool atmospheric sounds on his bass.

Beth Amsel was excellent. I got to FRFF too late to see her in the showcase, but many of you probably remember her.

Hope to see some of you Thursday for the 7:30 show.

I've always liked to try to view the song that way, which makes the line
about the State Police coming around, _really_ menacing. "I thanked them for
their kind concern/and sent them on their way" indeed. I suspect RS didn't
write it that way, but as a big fan of what in fiction is called "the
untrustworthy narrator" ("By Now" would be another example), I do like
trying to fit WFTS into that category.

Re: RS Personnel
One of the interesting things about managing Richard is that we seldom know
just who is going to perform with him on tour dates... for instance, I'd
been told that Radislav was going to play on some dates, but I had _no_ idea
that John and Lincoln were joining in anywhere. RS "band" fans might want to
know this: when Larry is out on tour, John will generally sub on guitar.
We're working on recording a live RS album in 2001 (more on this soon), and
the problem is that no one knows if Larry will be touring on the dates we're
looking at to record or not. Apparently Mr. Bob decides only a little time
ahead when/where he wants to tour.

Re: Bottom Line
FYI, Dave & Tracy will open the Bottom Line shows (30 min), and then Jess
Klein for 30 min, then RS Band for 70 min. (the usual amount of time for a
headline show). Late show: same, except RS can play as long as he wants
(probably won't play much more than that, as he is in the midst of a long
string of dates and needs his sleep). So, be aware that the early Bottom
Line show will start exactly at 7:30 pm in order to fit in the two support
acts.

Don't forget to feel free to visit the website to grab RS flyer masters (to
put up in _your_ town for upcoming RS shows) and mailing list forms (to take
to gigs in case RS forgets to put them out on his own).

Maybe I'm being paranoid, but after I re-read my earlier post regarding Richard's Sunday show, I thought it might have seemed that I was being critical of the venue in some way. Far from that. The mansion is gorgeous, the setting for the show was very nice indeed, and Steve Coccia was very helpful in getting us information about the show and our reservations. I just had a little different picture of how the performance would be, and that's nobody's fault but my own.

I felt the same way after seeing RS perform in the an upstairs bar in
Bowling Green, OH.  They put him right under a giant banner that read,
"$1.95 Long Islands!"  Needless to say I dreamed a dream I will not tell.

It's an interesting progression from short-term survival (wood, food) to
long term survival and comfort (clothing) to self defense (guns) to the
philosophical (God). Then at the end, he's reduced to a search for wood.

As a song, it's another example of Richard's wonderful economy of words. He
says so much with so little (particularly in the coats verse that Ron
mentioned).
