Susan messed with my head by offering the following reason as an excuse for missing the Dave and Tracy show at the Whately Chapel: >How's this one - I'll be at an Ellis Paul concert in NJ that night! Ouch, that was a low blow. Okay, I've changed my mind: There is NO good reason why any of you should miss this show UNLESS you've already made plans to see a certain charming longhaired guitar player in states not adjacent to Massachusetts (if they are adjacent, I'm sure you can make it somehow). And I DON'T mean Jimmie Dale Gilmore. (Is he charming? I've never seen him. I just know he has long hair.) There. Are you happy now? Ciao! I never heard 'I Saw My Youth Today' as Richard singing in his own voice. I have always assumed the story teller in that song is a homeless guy, down on his luck, lost in his own dreams, who comes across a boy on the street -- maybe his ownn son -- and experiences a flicker of lucidity.>> For what it's worth, I always considered this song coming from Richard's own experience. I would remind everyone that he does indeed have an older son from a previous marriage who lives with his mother rahter than Richard. It is entirely possible that inspiration for this song came to Richard after seeing his older son after a bit of an absence. Makes sense to me, although the song of course has universal truth as well. I can never decide between the following interpretations: One - that the speaker runs into his illegitimate child on the street - a child that doesn't know he's his father - and he sends his regards to his ex-flame. I.E. - I saw my child today. Makes the speaker kind of an ass or maybe not if he was asked not to be part of the childs life. Two - that Richard/the speaker sees a young man on the street who reminds him of himself as a youth. I.E. - I saw the twin of my younger self today. I wish I could go back and give my mom a kiss, but I can't so give your mom one for me. I like this interpretation better. It makes the speaker so sensitive and genuine and introspective and attractive - oooh I am getting distracted! I like some of the ideas posted by others too. Richard is a deep guy! ;-) E ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 23:50:25 -0400 From: Howie Lyhte Subject: Re: [RS] Weird Al At 05:37 PM 8/31/2000 -0400, you wrote: >John wrote: > > > >>"All I See is Forty Thieves" Not sure where this one would go... >"I Lost My Tooth Today" Perhaps "Youth" is too personal to satirize? >> > >Howie wrote such a parody song sometime ago. It's about an ad exec in the early '60s who is escaping the city in his sports car, and stops at a gas station for a fill-up and oil change. He notices that his old hometown is just 1.5 miles away, comments to the attendant that that's walking distance, and takes off on foot in that direction. But, when he gets there, he's gone back in time, and it's his hometown all right, but he's about 10 years old. He sees his father and mother, and, of course, himself. Try though he might not to do so, he does alter the future, ever so slightly. It's one of Serling's best, written by the man himself. This is what I thought about the first time I heard "I Saw My Youth Today,' and I guess it has affected my feeling about the song. I can see everyone else's take on it, though. Just think, if Richard was more popular, he'd be making videos of all these songs, and then we'd all have the director's vision imprinted in our minds. I like this a LOT better.
