Anyway . . . <> I've got to take issue on this one. There are simply too many aspects in which to enjoy music. While understanding lyrics (or being able to relate to them) is one of those levels, others include the melody, the overall sound and the musicianship (in this case -- Dar's voice stands *way* out). I also relate to Dar's lyrics in ways that even *I* can't understand. I'm not sure if it's in her phrasing, the emotion I hear in her voice, or the voice itself. I am enjoying this CD as much (if not more) than any CD she has produced. Much of that *may* have to do with the fact that I'm able to apply my own meanings to her words, or that she has left so much for me (us) to discover gradually. As I mentioned earlier, I believe this CD to have been one of the more difficult things she has ever undertaking. Understanding that (or at least thinking that I do) and empathizing with her makes for much appreciation of "The Green World." Oh, crap!! This is the Shindell-List!! Davis" Subject: Re: [RS] Wisteria Not exactly on topic but it's a nice story anyway: My husand and I met in college, and on our tenth anniversary (of meeting? of marriage? can't remember) we went back to my old dorm room / quad (they had four students in two tiny doubles plus a kind of living room/common room with a fireplace that has a few of its own memories :)) and said hi to the four guys that were living there then. We also left them a bottle of champagne -- after all the spouse doesn't drink. * Everything was in even rattier shape than when I lived there, peeling paint, etc., for shame, mother Yale!! The fellows were quite amused, and of course, they have long since moved on themselves. For that matter as I work in New Haven I drive or walk by the college often; I see the gate and the ivy and the bricks and remember walking back from the train station along the same street that first October weekend away. I suppose I reflect more on what has changed in my life than on the relative continuity of the place. * footnote it now occurs to me, years later, that at that point the drinking age had already been raised to 21, we didn't think of that! !! I kept hearing it on Grassy Hill Radio and eventually had to buy the album, and then I bought Reunion Hill, joined the list and began to listen to Blue Divide with a new appreciation. It's a powerful song. I didn't know what wisteria was until I moved to CA in 1985. I remember seeing some and describing it to someone as being like a great big grapevine with flowers hanging down from the branches instead of grapes. Wisteria, from what home owning and roofing friends have told me, can be very nasty in that it can burrow its way under the eaves and cause serious damage to a house. However if its kept pruned it can really add a lot of beauty and character to a home. People who don't want to be bothered with it will often remove it when they buy a home. I really like the analogy that Richard makes between memories and wisteria, what an amazing songwriter. Ron wrote: << Look, we all like music for different reasons. Some of us are lyric types, some are music types, some of us are in it for the intellectual stimulation, some of us want ear candy. >> I like music for all these reasons! That's why I like both Dar and Richard. Now can we please stop all this silly squabbling? They're not Quisp and Quake for God's sake!
