The big show on Sunday includes list faves David Carter and Tracy Grammer, plus Jess Klein, Jonatha Brooke and Wilco. They also are listing a "mystery guest," but anyone who read the Dar Williams list tour schedule noted she is supposed to be there that day. The day before features Ellis Paul, Paul Thorn and (I think, it's pre-coffee) Sarah Harmer. Seems like maybe a change from last year, when they had about a dozen people performing all day and and into the night on the first day. Hello: I returned home last week from the U.S. (I'm located in Germany) a great trip to Falcon Ridge and Boston. This was really a trip of first times: going to FRFF, seeing so many artists live, , enjoying terrific shows at Passim after Falcon Ridge. Falcon Ridge really lived up to my expectations - oh no, it surpassed them by a large margin. The music and the atmosphere was so incredible and magical... Music-wise the biggest surprise for me was Richard Shindell - yes, I always liked his music but now I'm completely hoooked! And that's why I am here now and hope to share my thoughts/feelings concerning his music with you guys on this list:-) Apart from the music there was more that made Falcon Ridge very special for me. I really had quite a rough time during the last months - In my life there are some things that are completely wrong, personal things that need to be settled and that aren't - - and only a lot of procrastination on my side. At Falcon Ridge all the worries and preoccupations dissolved. I was able to let go for the first time in about 6 months. The Hillsdale sun has melted my winter machine after all. And the best of all this is: now I'm back home and I'm feeling as light as a feather it must be the spirit of FRFF. No more procrastination. I will get things sorted out. Cheers to you all and thanks for listening, ~Reinhard BTW I apologize to all the darlisters here who had to read some parts of this twice:) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 23:42:53 +0200 From: Reinhard Liess Subject: [RS] Re: Deb Pasternak Some time ago Neil stated: >Deb's new album 'Eleven' is excellent, good strong songs with lots of >contrasts in styles and it has some great standout tracks. I only second that. She really transcends musical boundaries and the album cannot be categorized at all. I attended a show of hers (with band) in Boston in a weird place called Black Horse Tavern on 7/29/2000. Unfortunately they had a lot of technical problems, but I enjoyed it nevertheless and there weren't so many people:( I thought she really deserved better - on the other hand we got time to talk and this was very nice - I got somewhat psyched because she remembered my sending her a poem by email. So I might be biased as far as her music is concerned... - -Reinhard ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 18:29:29 EDT From: Lisa071573@aol.com Subject: [RS] green world << No personality conflicts. I'm new to the list.. lol :) I like the conspiracy comment :) anyway, I just got TGW today in the mail and am listening to it right now. yay! (Dar thanked Richard and Lucy in the liner notes so that's a good sign, right?) anyway, that's all for now... :) Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 14:22:43 -0400 From: traylor@juno.com Subject: [RS] Poor Richard's Almanac Katie (who likes parentheses) wrote: >>Lucy insisting that the only reason he was invited into Cry3 was to reach stuff on the top shelf on the bus?<< But isn't Richard kind of short? Oh well, I guess he's still taller than Lucy, not to mention Dar. It's funny. I first saw Richard with Lucy (at Hightstown in '97(?)). Then I saw him with Dar. He always seemed tall to me. Wasn't until I saw him next to other people that I realized that he isn't tall. Lucy and Dar are just short! Becky By the way, Lucy with Richard backing is the ultimate version of Ballad of MM. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! My reservations are made and I bet I won't have to share him with too many people in Anaheim, CA. I can tell that he has some big-time fans. I look forward to adding myself to that list. RE: Erin McKeown She is a little sprite of a person in stature and attitude! I was lucky enough to see her in June and I really recommend her. She is really different, but in a good way. I also really like her new album - Distillation. It is also obvious when talking to her that she is dangerously smart and a little wicked. Go see her if you have the chance. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 19:59:18 -0500 From: Buddy Brannan Subject: Re: [RS] Short People OK, this sounds really, really stupid, but. ... Welcome! it's fun to hear about people traveling across the "Blue Divide" to hear music - I'm considering a crazy trip to Paris for the same reason. And Richard's music is particularly helpful, somehow, in giving one perspective. I am listening right now to the Breton singer Gilles Servat sing, in french, the Lake at Ponchartrain. He says trad., and he heard it for the first time in Ireland, and copied it from Christy Moore's songbook. (1) I know I have heard richard sing this, but remind me who else? Dylan? Who else remembers Richard singing this? wonderfully, of course. (2) The CD comes to me as part of an international trade in which Jean-Jacques Pik of this list (introduced to Richard by me after he'd sent me some Gilles Servat with a corresponding effect) paid me back for some US dollars with a couple of CDs. I like these connections, which remind me of the way in which "Nowhere" (in a tune for...) always reminds me of the internet -- no borders, no boundaries, we can carry the torch for Nowhere wherever we may live. Now he's singing "On Raglan Road," in very accented English. (This is a trad. tune and I am trying to remember what other songs are put to this tune.) In fact about half of these songs are in English, since M. Servat is a big fan of Ireland. If anyone's interested..... lisa davis New Haven, Connecticut ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #207 ***********************************
