I had a press release from PrimeCD last year, and amongst the press quotes was one from RS saying how good Jack Hardy is and what an inspiration he's been. Don't have the press release to hand, so can't quote exactly His latest album 'Omens' (on PrimeCD) is an excellent singer/songwriter disc, loads of variety and strong melodies (plus a great interview by Suzanne Vega before track 1 AND a picture of Jack with hat in the booklet) here's a couple of samples from the disc http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/audio/know.ram http://www.fishrecords.co.uk/audio/sile.ram best Neil - ---------------------------------------- neil@fishrecords.co.uk www.fishrecords.co.uk Suppliers of singer/songwriter, contemporary folk and acoustic music. Then it hit me that the song is so personal that *nobody* else's voice would have fit perfectly. >> While I stand by my initial statement that there are places on TGW where both Richard and Lucy could have easily been brought in for harmonies, I didn't necessarily endorse the idea that they should have been, nor have I ever thought it a mistake for Dar to make a record absent the aforementioned. Surprising, perhaps, but certainly not out of line. There definitely is at least one male harmonizing on "And A God Descended." As for "After All," I concur that this is not a song where second or third harmonies are called for. It is a very personal, epiphanic ode to surviving her private demons, a veritable act of contrition put to song. It is at once powerful, painful and penetrating, perhaps one of the bravest, most amazing songs I've ever heard. Only Dar Williams could have written it. Only Dar Williams could sing it (though I have since learned it--courtesy RonG--and can play it but feel strange when I do). And I'm not surprised even she cannot play it whenever her parents are in the audience. It exposes a bit too much of her heart and soul. As well as her family's perhaps. Is it worth an 1-2 hour drive in >scary LA traffic to go see Jack Hardy??? I have never really >heard his music or seen him before. Anybody better informed? Hey folks, Haven't looked at this here fun Shindellio list in many, many moons, but a little birdie forwarded the above question to me: The quick answer is: Yes, absolutely. Jack Hardy is a stunning lyricist, and a powerful, original performer. He is the master canvas to which we all glance as we fling our drops of folk-paint around with abandon. He is also funny -- a surprise to many, but it's true. Jack is such a good songwriter that it is fankly just a little scary. So, why, do you ask, have I never heard of him? Simple answer? He's lazy. Unmotivated. Cynical. Jaded. Unwilling or unable to trumpet his own horn in an industry that demands self-trumpeting. If you call him, he'll come play a gig. If you don't call, odds are good he won't get out of bed. He has recorded twelve albums, ten of them great, three of them masterpieces of modern American folk. Also (strangely enough) modern Celtic folk. Don't ask... Just go listen. His albums are here: http://www.primecd.com Also, Ron Mura maintains a rather extensive site on Jack, but the URL escapes me at the moment. So, now that I've discussed the most important reasons to like Jack -- his work -- here's the things that actually make him famous: He founded and served twice as editor for Fast Folk, the mythical and monumental folk publication/recording project of the (mostly) 1980s, now under the control of the Smithsonian. Shindell, by the way, served time at Fast Folk as managing editor, I believe. He is the Jack of John Gorka's "Jack's Crows." He sings the spooky harmonies on Shindell's first album. He has run a now-infamous weekly songwriting "group" in his NYC apartment for twenty years, a group that has been a least partly (and in a few cases largely) responsible for the style and substance behind the art of "famous" ones like John Gorka, Suzanne Vega, Cliff Eberhardt, Shindell himself, and Lucy Kaplansky... and for "less-famouser" ones like Linda Sharar, Wendy Beckerman, Richard Julian, Bob Hillman, Hugh Blumenfeld, David Hamburger, David Cantor (Dave's True Story)... etc etc etc. Look at any of these artists and you'll see/hear Jack lurking in there somewhere. Especially Shindell and Gorka. Specifically to Shindell fans, you'll find a lot of common ground with Jack. Richard and Jack seem to have similar interests, some overlapping inspirations, and occasionally a similar point of execution in a song. They don't sing alike at all, but there are some definate similarities in their guitar styles. No, Shindell isn't a mirror of the old man, so to speak, but apples don't fall far from trees, and I can't possibly see how fans of Shindell wouldn't love Jack Hardy. I'm done ranting and raving now... Go make that drive, it's worth it. (And don't let the scary hat bother you...Jack is also a freak.) :) Best, - -Chris ******************************************************** Christian Bauman http://www.folkweb.com/christianbauman christianbauman@pobox.com "Try not to own anything you have to feed or paint." - -U. First, his discussion group abandons him for those flash-in-the-pan techno glitz rockers Carter and Grammer, then his 'dumping' by Dar Williams becomes tabloid fodder. No wonder the guy moved to Argentina. What's next, Gorka claiming that he was just 'carrying' Richard in the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band? Lucy insisting that the only reason he was invited into Cry3 was to reach stuff on the top shelf on the bus? Don't worry, there are still true Shindell fans out there.
