The guy was born on the West Coast and raised in the hinterlands of the Third Coast. The gal was born on the southern tip of the Eastern seaboard and was raised close by the California surf. Independently, they both gathered an in-depth knowledge of Native American culture, through education and osmosis. Their pre-teen and teen years were filled with the sound of classical music, and lesson, after lesson, after lesson. His instrument was the piano, while she chose the four strings by which she now makes a living. Then there were their "-ology" filled years - Musicology, Anthropology, Computer Technology, Psychology...and for him more than a few equations that were pure Math. When they had the opportunity to travel beyond the landmass of their birth, he chose China and she chose Taiwan. By birth, they are blessed with surnames synonymous with the historical preservation, as well as the creation of [vibrant, new] folk and country music in their native land. During the last decade of the century just gone, they chose, independently, to settle in the same city in the Pacific north-west - and in the period leading up to that event, she completed her studies at an establishment on the eastern shores of a bay, while he studied, from time to time, in the city on the west side of that bay. A city that was made famous in song by some crooner. A guy they called Tony. Of course, a life-long love of playing music is a given in this equation. And they still had not met. Hold on, this is beginning to sound like the plot to a Nora Ephron screenplay. Well, maybe it is....not. I don't suppose that the February night when finally did meet was any warmer or colder than normal; but then I'm no expert as far as the prevailing climatic conditions on Portland February nights are concerned. They met, in the entrance area, as they were [each] leaving the same building. Not really a meeting place that comes with a ready stamped guarantee, as far as establishing a relationship, that is going to go somewhere, is concerned. One that has an assured and lengthy future, that is. Their first, casual, exchange would certainly have held more promise if it had occurred earlier, let's say, on the way into the building; the thing was, he had a tight schedule that day and was late in arriving to perform a couple of his songs. Her companion, that evening, had suggested she "stay and listen to this guy." The guy's entrance may have seemed rushed, but by the end of performances of his "Snake-handlin' Man" and "Gun Metal Eyes," she was entranced. It's only later, in retrospect, that they were are able to discern the turning point. What was more important, they were soon to discover that a restless [seemingly life-long] search had reached fruition that night. Greater still, a whole exciting, new adventure had also, only just begun..................forget those celebrity surnames, they prefer to be known simply, as Dave and Tracy. Their speciality, music that knows no borders. Never has, never will. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 12:28:30 -0400 From: Katie Mahoney Subject: [RS] Wherever you are sleeping . . . Hey all! Speaking of "Goodnight," I think my favorite version is Buffy Sainte-Marie's. I like Cliff and Lucy's, but there's something very dark and atmospheric about Buffy's that I just love. Hers was the first version of that song I ever heard, though, and I think people are often partial to the versions they hear first. So, were any of you at Winterhawk this weekend? Let me just say that seeing Dave and Tracy five days out of nine has *not* been good for my obsession . . . Ciao!
