Whats the scoop?<< Richard played a CFox grand auditorium in Santa Cruz that was rosewood and spruce. It was very nice, but the sound guy made it too boomy. Acoustically it was amazing. Richard commented to us about how he was test driving it and asked how it sounded. He was afraid of scratching until an audience member suggested he might get a better deal if it was "used." He laughed. Charles Fox hails from Healdsburg, CA, the current Mecca for all luthiers these days. I'm not totally sure of the specifics, but Charles invented the preferred jig for guitar body assembly or something like that. Then in Sebastopol, I invited myself "backstage" after the show to ask Richard if bought it. He said not yet, and handed me another CFox and asked me how I liked it. This one is another grand auditorium in rosewood and cedar. The sustain is like a grand piano! (on a side note, it was tuned to DADGAD and the only songs I know in this tuning are his. I was so self conscious as I delicately picked around Wisteria and Best Western, trying not to be obvious yet still get a feel for the guitar. He didn't make me feel stupid though.) Some guy ordered it and then backed out, so Richard was offered an incredibly low price. The only problem with it is that the guy wanted a Fishman Blender (WHY??!!?) so it's got this huge hole in the side. I can't imagine how much better it could possibly sound if it hadn't been cut open. Richard commented that it's put together better than anything he's ever seen. Flawless. In San Diego, he played this one for the standard tuned songs and then grabbed the Martin SP00016 for the DADGAD and DADF#AD songs. For the second set he played the CFox exclusively and we waited while he retuned for various songs. He really likes the sound of this one and apologized to the Martin for abandoning it =) After the show we talked about guitars way too much for the rest of the lingerers, but he mentioned the Martin 00-15 he picked up earlier this year (totally mahogany and no binding). He said it's the best $500 he's ever played. He fondly remembered for us how he and Larry fought over which of them was going to buy it. He says it records very well and it's not a knock-around guitar in his humble opinion. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 07:35:05 -0700 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] RS in Acoustic Guitar Magazine Brian wished: >>I wish (acoustic guitar) would do an article on his music and technique.<< Me too! Thanks for the heads-up, I'll check the mailbox again. Lurker Rose here. I just wanted to tell you that there's a review of SNP on the web today. It's at The War Against Silence http://www.furia.com/twas This is a weekly music review by a fellow called Glenn McDonald, and I read it diligently, though I hardly ever know the artists whose work he reviews. He's got some, uh, interesting explanations of some of the songs, but it's a nice review. Like him, I think "Fishing" is one of the best songs of all time. I really recommend checking it out and maybe searching through the archives. I've found a lot there.... And all you Falcon Ridge folks, enjoy! Wish I were there, Rose Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 12:03:48 EDT From: "Batgirl of the Night" Subject: [RS] Richard's New Guitar I just noticed someone posted a message inquiring if anyone knew what guitar Richard was going to buy. Well, last night at the Makor show, Lucy announced that Richard had just gotten is new guitar, which he had with him. She told him it was cute. I know it was a Martin, but I am not sure of the exact model/size etc. One thing I can say is that it had one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard, very rich and full!!! Hey everyone! Well, this is for those of you that aren't already on their way up to the Ridge. I am leaving Friday morning at 6am. I would really love it for all of us Richard listers to try to arrange a possible day/time/location to meet up. Perhaps we could post messages on the main bulletin board(near the main gate entrance) as to where each of us will be camping/and which song circle area, etc. I will be bringing my guitar, I know many of you are musicians, singers so I would love to hear some of you jam. If anyone has an idea of where they will be please let me know or post it to the list. Let me describe myself so maybe someone will recognize me(I am fairly new to the list and haven't met any of you face to face yet)- My name is Renee, I'm 5-11, thin-medium build, long blond hair, I have a tribal tattoo, and an eyebrow piercing. So, if anyone recognizes me please come up to me and introduce yourself! I will most likely try to camp in the Camp Dar area, I will hang out near the song circles in that general area as well as the "Camp Hon"(I think it is a songwriters area) as well. *Brian(Berkonic@aol.com)- I really hope to hear from you, call me or else post a message on the main bulletin board of where you will be or if all else fails, look for me in the crowd). *Timothy-(timothybruce@aeromix.com)- I really hope to meet you as well. I hope you bring your guitar!! See you all soon!!!! I am really pleased to have a chance to discuss and enjoy RS's music with fellow fans; I have yet to meet someone else in the noncyber world who already knows RS (but, happily, almost everyone I have shared his songs with quickly comes to like them). I first heard RS on a community radion station a couple of years ago - -"Reunion Hill" was my introduction to him. Withing two hours of hearing the song I owned the CD, to which I have added "Sparrows Point" and "Blue Divide." What should I pick up next? It will be interesting to see if there is a consensus in opinion on that . A bit about me: currently located in Colorado, but moving to New York in five weeks to begin a teaching job at SUNY-Buffalo School of Law; I play no instruments but gladly sit and listen to those who do; and I will make Falcon Ridge next year or else . . . something else. HAHA! That's a BRILLIANT idea! A lister tribute CD! HAHA! Imitation is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery... If there was interest in it, I'd love to pitch in help (technically, musically, organizationally, or otherwise). It would be a very interesting way to re-listen to alot of the songs we know and love. - -Rich (I'll be chillin' at FRFF, hope to run into some of you folks there!) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #169 ***********************************
