But somehow over the weekend I just happened to drop by the webpage and couldn't stop myself and guess what's playing on my stereo now. I've got to say that Shades of Black is just so beautiful! I know we've talked about it before, and if I had paid closer attention or wouldn't be lazy to go to the archives now to look it up I'd probably know the answers to the following questions, but I know I can count on you guys :-) So: was that recorded during the SNP- sessions and put away for later use, or was it esepcially recorded for the spring-single? And who was it again who doing harmony? I know it's not Lucy, but who was it again? Well, I wish all of you lucky souls who are FRFF-bound the best of times, cheer for the man from Argentina (thanks for sharing that quote Kerry, how funny!) and the two lovely women who used to be in the band with him. And of course we do expect a full report. Still and all, sure would have made a nice "hidden" track. << And who was it again who doing harmony? I know it's not Lucy, but who was it again? >> Teresa Williams, who, I believe, is Larry Campbell's wife. Now if someone can just give us the story behind the song. I know it's about the death of songwriter Thomas Jefferson Kaye, but I'd sure like to know who the man in the top hat is, 'cause I'm betting it's not Abraham Lincoln or The Cat In The Hat. Since I've been working on my recording chops, I want tons of stuff to record...I've put to disc some of the above, also The Weather (thanks Ron!), Grocer's Broom, the Kid. I think I like playing his stuff more than some of my own songs! Called the Turning Point today about tix for the friday night show, and was told the early show was sold out. Does anyone have my ticket for the early show? I really can't make the late show, so if anyone can help me out, I'd be most appreciative. I'm relatively new to Richard's music, but I fell in a big way. Especially after seeing the early show at the Bottom Line in April. Incredible! Any help would most certainly get you included in my will. Thanx one and all. Back to lurking. The judicial decision drew protests Tuesday from human rights groups. The court ruled Monday after military officials brought charges of incompetence against a judge leading the probe into whether there was a system for illicitly adopting babies born to leftist dissidents in military custody. ``This is very serious, and could signal a series of political decisions by the court and government,'' said Alberto Pedroncini, a lawyer for the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, a human rights group whose suit spurred the investigation. Argentina's highest court is expected to rule eventually on the judge's capacity to head up the investigations, a decision that could affect whether the probe moves forward. Rights groups say the cases represent their best hope of bringing the former military leaders to justice. All were pardoned by former President Carlos Menem in 1990, five years after receiving life prison sentences for human rights abuses. The investigations prompted the arrest of nine of the military regime's prominent leaders, including former Gen. Jorge Videla, the regime's first president, and former navy Chief Adm. Emilio Massera. Both were leaders of the military junta that overthrew President Isabel Peron in 1976 and ruled until 1983. Most of the officers are currently under house arrest, as allowed under Argentine law for detainees over the age of 70. At issue is whether military officials systematically arranged for the adoption of more than 200 children born during the military's seven-year campaign against leftists and political opponents. The children's mothers are among at least 9,000 Argentines who vanished during the so-called dirty war. Human rights groups put the figure closer to 30,000. The investigation was prompted by a report from the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo which identified some 60 children born to mothers who eventually disappeared during the military regime. The mothers were often bound and blindfolded while giving birth in detention centers, the group says. Justice Minister Ricardo Gil Lavedra called for the Supreme Court to return the cases to Adolfo Bagnasco, a federal judge whose investigations have yielded the arrests. ``I hope this issue is resolved quickly and the case can again proceed normally,'' he told reporters. Estela de Carlotto, president of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, said she hoped Bagnasco would again head up the investigations. The Supreme Court decision ``should worry all Argentines,'' she said. There was no immediate comment from the Supreme Court. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 11:17:12 -0500 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] Covering Richard > From: RockinRonD@aol.com [SMTP:RockinRonD@aol.com] >> I can't think of the last open mic I've played when I didn't cover one of Richard's songs. So why not??? A few notes from Richards Lakeside show. First of all the venue is great and any CA listers should really go to a show at Jimmy Dukes house (www.darkthirty.com). I was lucky enough to be up front, but it really doesn't matter in this venue where you are. It was a beautiful night and due to a dramatic full moon Richard honored my request to play Calling the Moon which I think was a bit of a coup! Since he said he rarely plays it. One wouldn't know that from listening. In discussing it later he said that he had started with an early version of it and changed it a bit from Dar's version (with her blessing) so her version should be quite different. He also plays it in his special tuning and Dar will play it differently, so I am very interested in hearing Dar's version, although I am not sure where there is any room for improvement! Lastly he sang "if I don't answer I'm ONLY the moon" like the Dar lyric. I also asked him about what exactly his wife taught and he said that her specialty is the relationship between Peron and the Catholic church in Argentina. She is writing a book about the prison at Tierra Del Fuego(sp?). I also asked him, on the Argentina topic if we could expect a tango on the next album, he said it was a possibility (I hope so!). Lastly I thanked him for introducing us to James Keelaghen's music and he told us how at a recent songwriting conference James derailed the whole day with his gut wrenching "Captain Torres." I thought you couldn't write a more painful song than Cold Missouri Waters but Richard and I seem to agree on the fact that "Captain Torres" is about moving as a song can be. It was fun to get to really chat with him. He is so down to earth and such a nice person. However, for those of you bored with the guitar thread that lurked here a while ago, don't get Richard started, after chatting about guitars for about fifteen minutes with some like minded fans (Hello, John Clary!) he declared he could talk guitars all night. Luckily for those of us not so interested in that, someone interupted him! Anyways, it was a great night and I thought some of you would enjoy hearing what he had to say about the above. I am said though, because I think it will be a long wait to see him again in CA. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number - Free Free voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #166 ***********************************
