Lisa asked: >Does anyone know how richard feels about having left behind Valhalla and >his tomatoes? This reminded me of a rather hilarious thing Richard said to me when I asked him recently how things are going in Argentina. He said that, after they'd moved, he'd only been there 3 weeks when it was time to come back to the US to tour. He said, "It doesn't really feel like I've *moved* there yet. It's like I went to Argentina on vacation for 3 weeks and, when I got back to the US, somebody had sold my house!" K :) p.s. Boston-area listers - today is the release date for the eagerly-awaited Chris Smither live CD ("Live As I'll Ever Be") and, to celebrate the release, Chris will be doing an in-store performance (actually, outside, if it stays sunny) and CD signing at HMV in Harvard Square at 7pm this evening. Hope to see some of you there! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 09:36:31 -0700 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: [RS] covers and CA NT wrote: >> Not exactly....they do 2 -3 covers of an artist *some time* between 7 -9 a.m. How many people, besides Dar and Joan (sorry Ron) have covered Richard?<< Ron G and I have covered Richard live -- any one else? I'm not exactly a tribute act, but I know more than a few of his songs well enough to perform. That's the only good thing about being an un-known folk singer. No one gives you grief for covering the Master =) Btw, I do have complete set lists, tunings, capo frets, NEW guitars played, etc. for the CA dates last week, but I'm afraid that sort of stuff might only appeal to a minority of listers. I did miss one date -- SF on Saturday. Richard told me in San Diego the next night that he had been disappointed that I wasn't there. How cool is that?!!?! Made my week! Plus he asked me to play the new guitars he's considering buying and asked my opinion. I'm giddy, star-struck and still recovering. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 11:43:02 -0500 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] shirts, pins, hats, blah, blah, Lisa suggested: >>Folks, we grow weary (I say this having put in my two cents too). Let's adopt richard's mode of shirt instead. Plain black<< Richard didn't don a black tee shirt in CA all week. Pretty much it was short-sleeved camp shirts in various patterns, muted colors and he even wore a black sport coat in Santa Cruz (Kuumbwa is a high-falutin' Jazz Club after all). Always jeans and leather, round toe boots. Casual but sharp. Pretty much just like the Sparrows Point cover shot. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 15:58:06 -0400 (EDT) From: "Kelly Nice" Subject: [none] Au contraire. On Saturday in San Francisco Richard was in standard issue black tee. He must have snuck a peek at the audience before the show, noticed John Clary wasn't in attendance, and quickly changed from camp shirt to black tee : ). I actually know this isn't true because we saw him on the street before the show, shivering in the San Francisco summer with nothing but the tee to protect him from the fog. With apologies to Leonard Cohen, maybe Richard should write a song about the "famous black tee shirt" : ) Kelly John Clary wrote: Richard didn't don a black tee shirt in CA all week. I was outta range there for a while but I did hear Rita Houston refer to Richard as one of her favorite artists - I think this was after she had played "Fishing". And Darren Devivo (sp?) played ( as predicted) a bunch of Joan Baez's covers of Richard songs. God - I mean no offence to Miss Baez - but Richard's version of "Fishing" is a million times better than hers! I decide to post my "Turning Point Tips" to the whole list after somebody actually requested them. This info was accurate as of a few months ago. If the 10pm show is not sold out... think about it. Great place to see Richard, and $20 is a bargain compared to what practically anything costs in the less interesting part of the world. OK>>> BOB'S TURNING POINT TIPS<<<< FIRST - most important thing that is worth knowing. If you have dinner in the restaurant that sits on top of the club itself ( it's kinda a two story building - with a restaurant on the second floor and the music-listening club on the first floor... sorta), then they let you pick your seats for the first show ( and often the only show) BEFORE you eat. Thus meaning you get to reserve the very best seats - which in the case of The Turning Point means that you will be as close as is humanly possible to Richard while he performs - I mean if you want to be. Put it this way... if he were to like accidently like spit a little while singing ( hey, it happens) then you could have the honor of getting hit. Personally, I prefer the seats like maybe four people away from the stage... the one's right up front can be pretty intense... and the performer can hear everything you say... even if you whisper. In order to do this you need to make a dinner reservation, and tell them that you are going to the show and that you want to pick out your seats before you eat. The food is excellent... but a bit pricey for me. I think a nice dinner can be had for less that $25 an entree... but that may be without the drinks - so hey... it might be more than you want to spend. If you call them, they'll probably read some of the menu to you over the phone. Like I said, the food is really good. Other stuff worth knowing: Make sure you have good directions on how to get there. I know how to now... but the first time I went there it was a bit difficult finding the place. If you are coming from New York City, I would guess that you should go north to the Tappan Zee Bridge... then west across the bridge... and Piermont is south of the Tappan Zee Bridge on the western side of the Hudson... right on the water. There is actually a pier there - but you don't want to try to go out on it ( take my word for this... it has to do with rich people and tresspassing and stuff... even though it isn't actually tresspassing). So get some help with directions. Call the club or visit the website if you can't get a NYC person to help. And you need to have a decent map in the car with you. If you decide not to eat there, then just be sure to get there like at least 45 minutes before show time. A line will form in front of the club on the sidewalk. The club only seats 69 people... and 80% of the seats qualify as great. ( The seats at the bar ain't all that great, IMHO). I guess that's all that comes to mind. Hope you enjoy the show. See ya....
