We work bars, playing very typical bar stuff, and not so typical bar stuff, singer/songwriters like Lucy and Dar among many others. So we're working one of our steady venues, the New Britain Inn, having a good time, cranking out the tunes. As usually happens, folks start to move into the tables in front of us, kickin' back and slurpin' their Guinness's. Courtney, our lead singer asks for requests. From stage right comes the request "If you knew some Richard Shindell I'd really be impressed" Now, I've got some Shindell, which I learned at the behest of my lead singer. But she didn't have the words, and that's not my job. Norman, the requestor said that's OK, how about some Dar Williams like "The Babysitter's here". No prob. Banged that out. "How 'bout some Lucy Kaplansky?" Ten year night at yer service. Did When I was a boy just for good measure. The point is that if we got a request for Richard in a bar in Bucks County PA, Maybe more folks know about Richard than we think. It surprised the hell out of me. And Norman, if you're reading this, we promise that next month we *will* have the words down! - --------------------------------------------- This message was sent using Voicenet WebMail. http://www.voicenet.com/webmail/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 07:07:49 -0700 (PDT) From: emily matthews Subject: Re: [RS] Touchy As Hell - --- "Young/Hunter Mgt." wrote: > > So, if y'all would like to discuss it some more; go > to it. > what does a wisteria plant look like? could a "group" of wisteria blossoms look nice on a pin or in the small pocket area of a t-shirt? ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'll wait till I get back from Costa Rica in a month. Got back from one week off today and had 179 emails. Yikes! Doesn't look like I'll make it to any of this week's shows, what with trying to get ready for the trip. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 22:29:03 +0100 From: Peter Knight Subject: [RS] Tour Schedule Hi guys.. Dar is playing in Atlanta in November (hi sally) and i'm thinking of going because i thought Richard was playing there in November too (and I don't get to attend FRFF this year). Can anyone point me in the right direction for RS tourdates> Musi-cal.com only goes to spetember. thanks all peter ireland ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 17:50:09 EDT From: Pfleary@aol.com Subject: [RS] what a fun list! I joined this list just over a week ago, hoping that there might be a lot of discussion re: Richard's new album, or perhaps his move to Buenos Aires. Maybe these discussions have already taken place and I am too late in coming to the list, because I have found myself in the center of a raging controversy re: t-shirts and/or pins. Not wanting to be left out of any more discussions on the list, I vote for "Touchy as Hell" and personally I would like a pin not a t-shirt. So please do both. Thanks I'm looking forward to seeing Richard tomorrow evening in Palo Alto (there are rumors about a well-aged friend showing up for this show...we shall see). And I will also be seeing Richard right here at home in Sebastopol on Friday night. As Katie mentioned, he got a pretty prominent write-up (actually more of a blurb) and photo in the Sunday arts section of the local daily. Also, no worries Katie, if you folks do interview him I'm sure you'll let me know. And I'm sure you'll get to schmooze and hang out with him. To other listers: be nice to Katie, she has some MAJOR connections. Anyway, why did Richard, who has a musical career in the northern hemisphere, move to Buenos Aires? Peter ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 18:19:30 -0400 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] don't cry for me, Argentina Peter asked: >>Anyway, why did Richard, who has a musical career in the northern hemisphere, move to Buenos Aires? >> We've known about the move for some time and have had a few conversations about it. His wife, Lila, is from Argentina. They met in Europe, I believe. She recently obtained a position at Buenos Aries. She's a professor of economics, or something like that. Richard said something to the effect of that with his touring schedule, "you'll hardly know I was gone". Then he corrected himself saying that those of us in the northeast (particularly NY/NJ) will notice, the rest wouldn't. To Peter and Kathy and others who have joined recently---Check out the archives (linked from the mailing list link of www.richardshindell.com). We've discussed the new CD quite a bit (starting from early January) but please feel free to jump in with your own interpretations and comments. Norman ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 23:25:53 -0400 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: [RS] Peter Mulvey OK, I am listening to the Peter Mulvey half of the 3x2 sampler which has been permanently lodged in my CD player this evening since I came home from work and found that it had arrived today in a beautiful bubble-wrap package sent to me by the most excellent Pat Power (Thanks, Pat!) And all I have to say is. . . Wow. I know you guys said he was good, but damn, I didn't realize you meant he was *that* good! Ohhhhhhhhhh that voice. It's like, smokey, and seductive, and just a tad sinister, and aggressive, and so luscious and jazzy and sexy, oh, I have to hear more!!! And David Goodrich did a great job producing, and the arrangements on "The Trouble with Poets" and "Check Me Out" are crazy wicked. Oh, but the solo acoustic track is so, so personal and inviting and it's all "Listen to my pain cause I'm gonna make it all sound so pretty" and the guitar is intricate and unexpected, and the whole package is just thrill. And the lyrics are so smart and snappy and fun and deep. You can appreciate them superficially for their inherent music and their catchy rhymes and rhythms, but if you have the patience to delve deeper, there is a whole underbelly of meaning that awaits you. Yum. I probably haven't been this excited about a newly discovered artist since Richard Shindell. If any of you are waiting to get this sampler--stop! Go get it now, and buy "The Trouble with Poets" while you're at it--that's my plan, come payday, at least. Peace, Love, and Mischief, Vanessa, who's wondering if this Mulvey fellow is attached--mwahaha ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 08:55:12 +0200 From: Katrin.Uhl@t-online.de (Katrin Uhl) Subject: RE: [RS] Peter Mulvey Hiya Vanessa, > all I have to say is. . .
