My mistake was in thinking that the design was still up for discussion. And while it is true I have yet to see the design, it doesn't take a genius to imagine how it would look. As always, I applaud Charlie's efforts on Richard's behalf and of course I will reserve any further opinion until the T-Shirt is available for viewing. Then I can make the personal decision on whether it is something I would ever wear or buy. As it should be. As Shindell fans. And as a postscript: I don't even have a hammer, sad as that may be considering I own my own home. Ron ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 11:36:33 -0400 From: "Young/Hunter Mgt." Subject: [RS] Touchy As Hell Dear Listers -- Thanks for the kind responses; no permanent harm done to my self-image. My intention in saying, "here's what the design will be" was to synthesize what listers had suggested, and then, with Solomon-like wisdom, to announce the brilliant solution that answered everybody's concerns and desires. And Harold Stassen's intent was to be elected president. In any case, Katie is heading to Ireland for a couple of weeks, but here's the list she gave me of the compiled ideas. T-SHIRT IDEAS: "In DADGAD We Trust" "Hey Duck, Hows about a refill?" "Are you happy Cow?" "Thank God the traffic was light!" "Shindell's List" "I am wretched, I am tired." "Just Touchy as Hell" - - St. Agnes' Choir shirt, with "tour" dates for the prisons around Northern NJ (towns where listers live?) - - A single hawk soaring above Reunion Hill - - A fleur-de-lis PIN IDEAS: - - "Something more discreet" and "Better Service!" - - A fleur-de-lis - - A little pin with the picture of a bus that says "St. Agnes' Choir" on the side. My thoughts: What _I_ at least see a need for is a way for listers to be able to identify each other at shows (listers who do not _wish_ to be identified do not need to wear identification signifiers), and to pique the interest of concert-goers who might be interested in joining us. Thus a shirt or a pin. I like the idea of the shirt being something _group_ identified; i.e. "Shindell's List" or "St. Agnes' Choir." When we did the Dar-list shirt, it said, "As Cool As We Are". Something like that. "Shindell's List" is great, of course. It describes what the wearer is a member of, and it tropes a popular culture reference. However, my understanding was that there was some concern that "Shindell's List" might conceivably be construed as making light of something we should not make light of. And Richard has raised the same issue to me previously. So "Shindell's List" is out. There seemed to be interest in both a pin and in a shirt. I like the idea of a high-quality cloisonne, and I know a good place that does them beautifully. I thought it would be nice to have a unifying image on both, as our numbers are not yet legion. So, if a non-lister sees a lister at a show wearing a pin with a distinctive image on it, and asks what it is, then sees someone else at the show wearing a shirt with the same image, they can go "a-HA." Whereas if there were a bunch of different images, it seems like we'd look like a small group riven by schisms. The image should be simple, but strong and interesting, as it needs to translate big (shirt) as well as small (pin). There had been a bunch of discussion about a fleur-de-lis, and then some concern that we'd look like we were a bunch of Boy Scouts (literally). The fleur-de-lis appeals to me in that it is a strong, simple graphic device. However, it needs to have some treatment done to it to make our use of it distinctive - thus my thought to superimpose the tire iron (I'm thinking of one of those four-way ones) onto the fleur-de-lis. Hideous, perhaps, but also absurd; combining two disparate items anachronistically. Hopefully, it'd be funny. Like bringing a mag wheel into Chartres cathedral. Well, it doesn't seem like that struck a responsive chord with the listers, so fine; let's can that idea. As for the other suggestions, here are my thoughts: "DADGAD" (it sort of eliminates the non-guitar-heads) "Hey Duck" (funny, but has no 'group' connotation) "Cow" (seems strained to me) "Thank God..." (no group connotation, not strong enough a quote to resonate with non-listers who see it) "I Am Wretched..." (funny, but would you want to wear it if you're neither wretched nor tired?) "Touchy as Hell" (hmmm..... maybe this _would_ be a good one) - - Hawk/Reunion Hill (the problem here, it would seem to me, is that it could look like it might be a shirt for a nature center, or just one of those inexplicable patriotism/nature image shirts they seem to sell at truck stops). So, if y'all would like to discuss it some more; go to it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 11:55:20 -0400 (EDT) From: Katie Mahoney Subject: [RS] T-shirt-ness Elwestrand said: >I think the problem arose because >you said you had decided what it >was going to be and we reacted >based on your decision. There probably were 600-700 people there, most of which I believe had never heard of Richard (though a 30-minute interview on the local NPR station Friday afternoon probably brought some people out). The show was part of Chattanooga's "Nightfall" series, where every Friday this summer there is a free concert at the above-described plaza; many people are there just to hang out and not listen closely to every lyric. Richard was accompanied by Radislav Lorcovic (piano, accordion), which was a nice touch. On one song, Radislav also "played" the change in his pocket to simulate a percussion sound. The show was great and Richard made A LOT of new fans and sold MANY copies of "Somewhere Near Paterson" (the only CD of his that was available there). Charlie, as for the t-shirts, my only request is that they be 100% cotton and come in XXL. I agree that a vote on 3 or 4 potential designs would be good. If people don't like them, they don't have to buy them. My only comment is that "Shindell's List" would be offensive to me and others (while the e-mail list has a similar name, it does not evoke Shindler's List, thus is not offensive to me). ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 22:11:13 -0400 From: "L. I think it was from Sparrow's Point Elementary School somewhere in Maryland. What I can't remember is what it said. The image could then be a sparrow. I suppose I have in mind "Greetings from Sparrow's Point" on the front and www.richardshindell.com on the back. I like the idea that it's the first CD and if you are into exclusivity, it may also be the least-known CD at this late (!) date. If you want to trigger questions, someone is bound to ask where Sparrow's Point is. Well, since this still seems to be open. I suppose there's a bit too close a link to "Greetings from Asbury Park, New Jersey" (for those of us who own old Bruce Springsteen) but even in that case the choice was made because it's something familiar and quaint, old souvenirs. Even if it does have a Springsteen ring, that's not all bad, is it. One more request. I am vain enough to dislike wearing crew-neck T-shirts. Any chance this time of a V-neck? And finally, if you do one of these, how 'bout in black, which seems to be Richard's color of choice these days (oh, the old days when it was a kind of indigestible green concert after concert :)), either because it is existentially chic or slimming :) I'd go for either reason! lisa ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #151 ***********************************
