While I love John Gorka's earl;ier work, especially "Jack's Crows," I still would strongly recommend "After Yesterday" to anyone looking to discover the unique talents of this very special singer/songwriter. To be sure, it is a departure from the standard folk genre, wandering into jazz and other inventive modes, but I think that's its strength. It is boldly experimental, yet Gorka's remarkable way with words and his unusual views of the world and his own life still resonate in every track. It is one of my favorite records of the last couple of years. Don't miss it. And I am loving the video as well. A lot of die hard Gorka fans that I know were a little disappointed in this one because of it's "happier" tone. They think John is getting a little too mellow what with the wife and new kiddies. Not me. I think it's a nice change from some of his darker stuff, but I still like the old stuff a little better. Katrin asked >>>Does anybody know when his new album will be released (or was it already released and I missed it?) - Lucy was talking about being over at his place recording backing vocals for that album earlier this year.<<< I've deleted the email that had this information in it, but his manager said something about it being available early NEXT year. Long time to wait between albums, I know. But he's out there touring of course. Maybe you can catch him on your trip over here. :-) SMOKEY Embrace what you have in common, celebrate what sets you apart It takes more than the color that you find on a palate to turn humanity into an art... -Ellis Paul ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jul 2000 10:09:25 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [RS] Reservation blues from what i hae seen around- sherman alexie was working on a movie version of his book " reservation blues' which both Lucy kaplansky and dar williams were asked to pen a song in the Hopelessly Devoted to you with a joni mitchell twist, to it.. Oh, so many, but the record that is in my player a lot these days is the latest from the Nields: "If You Lived Here, You'd Be Home Now." They travel in similar circles as Richard (i.e., Dar Williams), and they are "similar" to Richard in that they write a lot of what I call "fiction songs," about fictional characters and events. In fact there are enough good tracks on this (long) CD I'm suprised he didn't extend it to two separate releases! Stand-out tracks for me are 'The one that got away' and 'Love is our cross to bear' Chris - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Katrin Uhl" To: Sent: Saturday, July 01, 2000 7:30 AM Subject: RE: [RS] John Gorka recommendation > > I have a paycheck burning in my pocket and I want to buy a John > > Gorka CD. I really like "Cypress Trees" from AFTER YESTERDAY, especially with Lucy' harmony. Re: JACK's CROWS. I once heard Gorka do "Where the Bottles Break" live. That was a treat. I also agree with Deb about The Nields' IF YOU LIVED HERE, YOU'D BE HOME NOW. It's their best to date both in terms of songwriting and production (think of the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's). It's their best to date both in terms of songwriting and production >(think of the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's). Having interned with Patty Romanoff while the album was being put together, I got to hear a good number of the songs going onto the album. While I wouldn't compare it to Sgt Pepper, I think Dave C's production skills have gotten really sharp. I didn't much care for Play as an album, in large part because of the production. ...Home..., on the other hand, is a much tighter album, and that much stronger for it. And considering all that, I'm still trying to figure out why I haven't gotten myself a copy yet. Stupid Human. 'later, jeff. slightly on topic... I think Larry Campbell's production improved greatly between Reunion Hill and Somewhere Near Paterson. I rarely listen to the former anymore, and the only reason I haven't listened to the latter recently is because I need to get it back from my housemate. - -- Caroline swears, she says, "I love you," Man, I know she's lying 'cause I'm lying too --Dave Carter - -- (an index of free radical activity) http://www.onefreeradical.com/Journal/ ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #143 ***********************************
