When Dar played at the Outpost in the Burbs in New Jersey last winter, it was on a very rainy, damp, chilly evening. Understandly, the new strings on her Larrivee just would not stay in tune in the damp church. So she borrowed Anne Weiss' (who opened for her) guitar--an old Gibson Sunburst--the very same guitar Dar once owned and poses with on the cover of The Honesty Room. Dar gave the guitar to Weiss as a gift. Well I, for one, thought Dar's songs sounded much weaker, less resonant from that guitar than her Larrivee. It sounded almost tinny. But in Anne Weiss' hands, the Sunburst sounded darned good. Weiss' songs are much more bluesy, a barre chord percussive style that is much better suited to the Sunburst in my opinion. Just goes to show you that certain guitars are better for certain types of playing--just another consideration when choosing one. Hope you're listening SharonG. And only $4,850 US =) wow, even with the lousy exchange rate right now that is still cheaper than here. It would be about $5800 here. > More than I'm going to > spend, probably. Keep buying lottery tickets. Oh, definitely. :-) Katrin PS: the guitar I own is one I've never come across in the States. When I bought it I was pretty clueless about guitar makers, the only thing I knew was that for some reason I didn't feel like getting a Yamaha, even though a lot of people had recommended it to me as a beginner's instrument. My guitar is a Tanglewood TW 15. Korean made, I was told it's a British brand. It rather inexpensive, sounded and felt great to me (I stayed away from those guitars that I couldn't afford anyway, I didn't even want to know what they sound like). I still think it has a great sound for that quality of a guitar, I've used extra light strings lately (Martin strings... I thought I'd at least start with the strins if I can't afford the guitar :-) ) ____________________________________________ we come to pass not to stay all that matters anyway is what will follow you Peter Mulvey (all the way home) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 2000 08:57:24 -0400 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" I understand that they sell a lot of guitars and that pays the bills, but I'm wondering how they manage to keep pushing their crap onto otherwise reasonable musicians? Do they sound that good when plugged it? Is that acoustic-electric market just that big for them? Even so, give me a nice Fishman pre-amp any day over a plastic-shelled, lap-sliding, thin sounding, weird sound holed Ovation. P.S. I'm not bitter. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 2000 09:22:26 -0500 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] Still more guitar stuff Dave asked: << By the way, does anyone share my enthusiasm for sunburst guitars? >> I love sunbursts but I haven't seen many recently that appealed to me. Perhaps the mass-makers are getting sloppy but the electric guitar sunbursts (even on the Gibsons -- didn't they invent sunburst?) seem to have drastic transition. I have not seen a Collings sunburst yet. Bruce Weber of Sound to Earth, who used to run Flat Iron before and after Gibson bought them, does a beautiful sunburst on his Big Sky f style mandolin. Sunburst is an art form that really brings out the beauty of an arch top imho. j a c ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 2000 07:45:38 -0700 From: "Clary, John (CLRY)" Subject: RE: [RS] Re: Cheap Guitars Ovation is owned by Kaman Music who also owns Takemine and lots of other things. To me an Ovation isn't chocolate or vanilla, but it's a flavor that appeals to people none the less. Go figure. A Berkeley commune neighbor of my parents named Bill Collins bought one of the first Ovations. He used it for session work with Jefferson Airplane. He was so unhappy with the sound that he cut a huge hole in the back right below the sound hole to make it better. He finally just threw it away or so I'm told. I was just a baby at the time. j a c > -----Original Message----- > From: Dupas, Edward (E.M.)
