Hey, I do. John is my all-time favorite. I've been a fan since I was about 10, so that makes it 28 years. I also agree that different people have different tastes, and there's nothing wrong with that - that's what keeps the world interesting! One of the great things about music is that there is such infinite variety and there is so much to experience and learn about. Our CD collection (400 or so) is quite varied, ranging from folk to rock to pop country to classical to world. I devote more CD time to "folk-oriented" singer songwriters, ranging from John to Richard and Ellis, while my husband tends to listen more to "folk-rockers" like the Kennedys and Nields. His was the first album I ever bought. Marched myeself right uptown to the dime store and bought "Greatest Hits" with my own allowence money. If you can get past the hokey...and doesn't everyone have a little hokey in them?...you'll find some wonderful thoughts and music. In response to the following post: ""Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 12:04:10 EDT From: FJPQ@aol.com hi everyone, I'm breaking out of my role of consummate lurker to cast my vote for the "St. Agnes' Prison Choir" though I am not sure since "...altos and baritone, basses and tenors..." are the only ranges mentioned. what's a soprano to do? discussing it with my Sister (no, not Maria, its Nancy(TRNMT)) I suggested that perhaps sopranos don't commit crimes...well, then again, there is always Tony Soprano and his "family"....""" I think it would be because this is a men's prison, and typically you don't find male sopranos. I think a male singing soprano would be classified as a falsetto or high tenor, or would have to be a child (or eunich) because the soprano sings in the highest vocal range. Of course, I am not a musical specialist in any way, so this is just my simplistic observation. BTW, I would like to cast my vote for the St. Agnes's Prison Choir t-shirt, or for a pin that says "Better service." Depending on cost, I might even buy them both. I still wear my dar pin made by a lister that says "We find magic everywhere." People ask me all the time what it means and I can introduce them to dar that way. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 13:04:43 -0400 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" Subject: RE: [RS] Happy Idiots <> Wow, it is nice to see there are a few J.D. lovers out there. I am now 28 years old and in the last 10 years I have discovered that there is this whole sect of gen-x'ers who were raised on John and years later have some unexplainable connection to his music. I am always helplessly transported back to my parent's living-room in our old house when certain songs come on. I tried to fight it for a while, but it was such sweet surrender (no pun). - -----Original Message----- From: Susan Koval [mailto:skoval@telcordia.com] Sent: Thursday, June 01, 2000 12:06 PM To: shindell-list@smoe.org Subject: RE: [RS] Happy Idiots Ed wrote: >Hell, a lot of people probably wouldn't understand my soft spot forJohn Denver (shhhhh). Ed bad-mouthed cauliflower. Should he be allowed to get away with that? As to John Denver, he was fairly credible in the early 1970s, when songs like "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "Rocky Mountain High" came out. In fact, the latter was practically an anthem for a group of people, including me, who left cities to live in rural areas back then. He began to lose his reputation as an environmentalist songwriter because his songs grew syrupy -- at least the ones that got airplay grew syrupy. He did have a magnificent voice and some serious talent, though. Maybe John Denver is an example of all the bad that can happen to folk singers who cross over too wholeheartedly into the mainstream. Trying to appeal to mass markets does weird things to artists. I mean, can you picture Richard Shindell doing movies with George Burns and concerts with Frank Sinatra? I think we're better off with Richard's music reaching a select group who believe in and understand what he does. As long as that group is large enough for him to earn a decent living, he can continue to make music that comes straight from the voices in his head, without being filtered through the commercial kaleidoscope. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 13:41:00 -0500 From: "Eley, Bill" Subject: RE: [RS] Why no sopranos?
