In fact, Mulvey opened for Dar Williams' End of the Summer tour a few years ago--I remember seeing him in Stanford. So Peter and Richard MUST know each other somewhat. Richard's music, voice and writing isn't for everyone, but the criticisms this guy leveled are so misinformed and inaccurate it's pathetic. One wonders if he's ever actually listened to any of Richard's music at all. Go kick their collective butts, Patrick. Let me know how it goes. When Peter was over here a while back I had asked him if he knew any of Richard's songs (because he had been playing Dar's 'The Ocean') and while he did'nt seem to know any of Richard's music to play, he was certainly in awe of Richard and referred to him as a 'heavyweight'. I would'nt start a cross war list. Both Peter and RS are fine musicians and are both miles ahead of the pack in terms of artistry, technique and sheer brilliance. One idiot can't change that. True, he didn't seem to be very educated about what he was saying, but if you don't like someone's music, sometimes there *is* no how or why to it, it just doesn't appeal to you. There is no way to "convince" someone else to like something that just doesn't do it for them. I've often thought that if I liked a particular artist, and someone else liked that artist, then we must share the same tastes and favorites. But it just isn't so. I know there are fans on this list who like Richard AND Peter. And there are fans on this list who like Richard AND Ellis Paul. But the truth is that everyone just likes what appeals to them in some way. For instance, I can't stand to hear Carrie Newcomer, even tho I've pretty much followed her career as she moved from local folky to a more visible presence in the folk world. I couldn't give any "good" reasons why I don't like her, I just don't care for her voice or singing style. But I sure hope no one from her list comes over here to "get me" for it! :-) By the way, if anyone here *does* like her, she'll be performing a free outdoor show here (Bloomington, IN) at Third Street Park on June 23rd. Now, lucky me, it's a beautiful day and I get to have lunch on the courthouse lawn at the Strawberry Festival, listening to Malcolm Dalglish perform. Anyone know of him?? What a wonderful break from work! :-) SMOKEY It's a long strange ride, I can't tell you why But there's a place in your pocket where peace can abide You pull it out, it's a compass, a guide And it will put a little soul on you. ---Ellis Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 17:26:53 +0200 From: Katrin.Uhl@t-online.de (Katrin Uhl) Subject: RE: [RS] Happy Idiots Back last fall when Peter Knight, Dave McKay amd myself organized a house concert at Pete's place with Peter Mulvey, we asked him whether he knew Richard's music. He didn't (Kerry, if that's still the case, can you give the man a few CDs?) - later on after the gig those who had stayed around did a little song circle and Peter (Knight) played Are you happy now. Peter (Mulvey), who sat next to me, listened closely, and then said "Man, I'd hate to be on the receiving end of that song" I'll go over to the deep-blue list now to post my two cents. Of course everybody is entitled to their own opinion and personally I could never get into Shawn Colvin's stuff and I don't really care for Lori McKenna, even though my favorite Scotish guy loves her. I won't hold that against you though, Dave. ;-) Of course I'll never understand why anybody could not like Ellis or Joan, but, oh well, that's life ;-) > > Somehow I don't think Peter Mulvey could possibly share that > idiot's views > on Richard Shindell. Katrin so what's the verdict on the shirts or pins? ____________________________________________ "baby lets live in the moment because it feels like life is taking the moment away" Ellis Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 11:39:19 -0400 From: "Dupas, Edward (E.M.)" Subject: RE: [RS] Happy Idiots My honest problem with this guy is not going on the offensive against Richard, but going on the offensive at all. It is just a matter of preference. I always try to refrain from talking down another person's tastes in music, food, etc. I understand that sometimes it is just "not for me." Hell, a lot of people probably wouldn't understand my soft spot for John Denver (shhhhh). It goes both ways in most cases. I could say "cauliflower is a terrible vegetable," and I wouldn't be lying about my opinion because I really can't stand it. However, the reasonable side of me understands that it is probably the greatest vegetable in the world to lots of other people. None of us are really wrong, we just taste it differently. In the end I think this is a very simple concept to grasp, it is all about respect and courtesy for other's opinions. The guy from the Peter Mulvey list had little of either, too bad he is the norm and not the exception. P.S. I have stepped off of my soap-box. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 10:49:19 -0500 From: Timothy Bruce Subject: [RS] FRFF or bust BATGIRL wrote yesterday: >I would like to contact Sharon G. I spoke with Timothy Bruce and he said I should get in touch with her because she, like myself, lives in Queens.....< Say, Batty, a lot of this FRFF stuff should be done off-list directly with the folks involved, with the exception of Shawn Kelly whose general-info and carpool site I referred you to earlier. See below. Information and tips on camping at the festival can be found at this URL: http://mit.edu/skkelly/www/frff-bring.html. FRFF has an electronic discussion list available for the latest information on ride sharing, carpooling, group camping and anything else related to the festival. To join this discussion list, send an e-mail request to owner-falcon-ridge@mit.edu. You may also send a message to the list without joining, by sending an e-mail message to falcon-ridge@mit.edu. Shawn relishes the opportunity to serve this new community. Did you decide to drive your own car and seek riders or be a rider yourself? Either way I'm sure he'd be glad to help you out. I don't think sharong is looking for riders at this time--heck she don't even got no automobile at this time due to her mishap! I am not fount of knowledge when it comes to how to do this festival, as I will be the quintessential out-of-towner when I hit The Big Apple (ya know, stiff neck from looking up too much!). There is an informal gathering of Lucy fans that will get together at the Makor for a show on the night before but this is not a jumping-off point for the festival as it doesn't open until the next day--I guess most will leave from their respective homes the following day (Thursday) and meet at Camp Dar. I don't foresee a caravan or anything. One gets a hold of SharonG simply by entering-in one of the e-mail addresses attached to her many posts. Lacking that, I suggest you close your eyes and click your heels together three times and repeat over and over again "I am wretched, I am tired...I am wretched, I am tired..." SharonG is a national monument and treasure and has always been very open and helpful but (as with all of us) there are limits to what she can offer, especially now that her life is sorta topsy-turvy. Even I am not driving up with her. By the way, a careful reading of her posts would indicate that it is her new JOB that is in Queens, not her residence, so there is no convenience factor for you there. Maybe someone else on the list will be closer to your neck of the woods. With that said, please understand that a lot of this FRFF specific stuff would best be done off the list...we're a worldwide group and only a few of us are planning of being in New York that weekend. The rest could easily tire of it. By the way, how did you do with the chords you got for the Dar songs? Are Richard songs next? Are there any you'd like me to work on from this end?
