The passing soldiers only reinforce her feelings for her husband, and stir up emotions that remain unfulfilled since he has been gone. Last night he played to what appeared to be a sellout crowd at The Old Town School of Folk Music. Pete & Maura Kennedy opened for him and were fantastic. Great stage presence and chemistry (stands to reason since they're married to each other.) They also navigated a very awkward moment when an OTS staffer interrupted one of their songs to ask if there was a doctor in the house. We found out later that the person who needed CPR was all right. Richard started at around 9:20 and played for almost an hour and a half. I won't go through the set list since it mirrors a lot of what he has done around the country but I will say that there were some real highlights for me. Rad was with him on keyboard and accordion, as he was the last time he played here, and I enjoyed his contribution more so than I did last time. Richard has definitely elevated his performance skills since then as well. My wife and I both felt as if we were really hearing some of his songs for the first time, (Richard Live - accept no substitute) I've listened to "Transit" at least a dozen times and it never really had much impact until last night - a truly epic performance. I also loved his solo version of "Confession." The slowed down take of "Reunion Hill" was interesting but I think I like it a little faster. His first encore, with Pete & Maura Kennedy, was "Sing Me Back Home" by Merle Haggard, followed by Richard and Rad doing "Mary Magdelene." I wish he had played more and that he had been out in the lobby afterwards. It would have been nice to talk to him (for me, not him!) But all in all, it was a very special night. I'm envious of everyone on the East Coast, getting to see him so often.
