Perhaps some more Canadian dates are on the way as well...? The Black Sheep is a wonderful, wonderful venue. Unfortunately, it's impossible to reach by public transit... It's in Wakefiled, Quebec, about a half hour drive out of Ottawa. I'll have to find a friend with a car, I guess. You music-lovers probably know about this already, but I thought I'd post this--the government has taken action against certain major record labels to decrease the cost of CDs. Thought it would be of interest since we were talking about CD prices not so long ago. I've been really quiet lately--exams--but I'm enjoying the discussion. Call me a quasi-semi-demi-lurker for a little while. ;-) - --Vanessa FTC Reaches Settlement With Record Companies The Federal Trade Commission reached settlements on Wednesday with five major music distributors, who were accused of illegal cooperative advertising programs. Universal Music and Video Dist., Sony Corp., Time-Warner Inc., EMI Music Distribution and the Bertlesmann Music Group, who are responsible for about eighty-five percent of compact disc sales in the U.S., have agreed to end their current "Minimum Advertised Price" programs, which, according to the FTC, have cost consumers an estimated $500 million over the past three years. The MAP policies were instituted in the early Nineties when consumer electronic stores like Circuit City entered the realm of retail music sales. In an attempt to build a loyal customer base, these newcomers offered new release CDs at prices lower than the traditional music outlets. A price war ensued as older music retailers struggled to maintain their market share and initially lowered their prices in an attempt to fight the new competition. In an attempt to end these price wars, record companies established the MAP plan which offered music retailers a cooperative system -- record companies would offer promotional support (advertisements, in-store signs, television and radio spots) in exchange for the retailer offering the music at an inflated price, the MAP. The plan resulted in increasing unit costs; the record companies increased prices to retailers, who in turn increased prices to the consumer. Eventually the cost of CDs to customers neared $20, as 1999 releases like Dr. Dre's Dr. Dre 2001 and Method Man and Redman's Black Out! ushered in a new $18.98 list price. As part of the settlement, the five companies in question are prohibited from tying any promotional money into the advertised prices of retailers for the next seven years. For the following thirteen years, the companies are forbidden from offering promotional money contingent upon advertisements for which they didn't pay. "These settlements should help restore much-needed competition to the retail music market, consisting of $15 billion in annual sales," says FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky. "Today's news should be sweet music to the ears of all CD purchasers." No fines were assessed against the record companies. The settlements are expected to save consumers as much as $17 million a month on compact discs, which make shake out to savings of $2-5 per disc. ANDREW DANSBY (May 12, 2000) - -- "We have that massive fight sequence at the beginning of the film and that's followed by a series of massive fight sequences building up to a massive fight sequence so we can end on a fight sequence which is what I'd describe as...massive." --Russell Crowe, discussing his new film, "Gladiator" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 May 2000 03:31:15 EDT From: SMOKEY596@aol.com Subject: [RS] Friday Night Show I'm just now home, at 2 in the morning, from my road trip to see Richard in Newport, KY. We were at the very front table, because I didn't want to miss a thing. It was my first time to see him, and all I can say is wow wow wow! :-) I was NOT disappointed! Lynn Miles opened the show and played for about an hour. I'd never heard or seen her before, but several people have recommended her to me (I can't remember if it was this list or another one). I loved her voice and some of her songs, but I confess I was very anxious for her to finish up so Richard could come out. :-) She did tell us that Richard had a new guitar that he was very proud of and that we should tell him how lovely it was when he came out. So..... Richard came out and everyone shouted out how great his new guitar was. :-) He really did seem to enjoy it. Here are the songs he sang, although they aren't necessarily in the right order.... Next Best Western Confession You Stay Here Wisteria Are You Happy Now Shades of Gray You Again Transit Fishing Lazy Kenworth of My Dreams Encore: He brought Lynn back up there to sing along with him on "Sing Me Back Home". It was very lovely. He was upset with Lynn for not singing his "favorite song" during her set, so he then let her use the new guitar so she could sing it, and he sang along with her. Again, lovely. They both left the stage, and then he came back and sang the slowwwwww version of "Reunion Hill". I was really hoping he'd sing that one, but didn't care for the slow version as much. I guess it could grow on a person, but it didn't have time to grow on me tonight. :-) My friend even remarked that it seemed very slow, and she had never heard the original version. But I'm not complaining! I was just so happy to hear it. There were the usual stories throughout that I think everyone here already knows, so I won't repeat them. If I've left out anything vital, just ask. :-) I thought the show was just wonderful. I was a little disappointed that, because of the double billing, it wasn't longer, but I would have been happy just to hear one song! I can't wait to see him again!
