Just when I thought the music gods were against me because I can't go to FRFF, I come across a wonderful festival this summer in the town I went to highschool at. So I will finally get to see Lou Reed (just ordered the new CD, anybody have any comments on that one?) and the next day it's Ani, yeah. I'm not a huge Ani-fan but I like the albums I have and I'd be nuts not to go, considering I always complain about nobody touring here :-) But, she's not headlining the evening, she's opening for Joan Armatrading whose name I know but who I've never heard before. Somehow my head things blues and guitar. Is that right? Do I want to spend a lot of money to see Ani play 30 minutes and risk maybe not liking Joan Armatrading? Any comments on her music would be really appreciated - it's still a long time til the festival, but I always get so excited about concerts when I find out about them, so I had to ask right away. :-) thanks, Katrin ____________________________________________ we come to pass not to stay all that matters anyway is what will follow you Peter Mulvey (all the way home) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 15:29:43 EDT From: "Batgirl of the Night" Subject: [RS] RICHARD SHINDELL-" BRILLIANT AT THE BOTTOM LINE!" Greetings to all fellow Richard Shindell fans! I am a new fan, I only discovered Richard a couple of months ago but I am now officially in love with his music!I was fortunate enough, thanks to WFUV, to attend the 10:30pm show at the Bottom Line on April 27th. It was a fabulous, heartwarming evening to say the very least! Mary Gotthier opened for Richard. I found her to be very witty, with clever lyrics and a soulful voice. As Richard sang his first song, I was instantly hooked, mesmerized by his beautiful voice and haunting guitar. My mom and I, both being new to Richard's music, were equally impressed and moved by his passionate performance. During a couple of minor problematic situations(one of his acoustic guitars refusing to amplify due to a wiring malfunction and later on one of his strings snapped), he kept the audience entertained by reciting a clever joke about an accordion player. When he was finished replacing his guitar string he plunged right back into the show. It was all so intimate and personal, the captive audience was barely affected by the 5 minute delay. Incidents like these are what make "live" music so special, it's very spontaneous and fun! Richard also shared some of his own personal stories explaining the meaning and inspiration of each song, which only added to the already exquisite presentation. I was completely exhilarated by his poignant lyrical style and unique delivery. I felt the combination of the band with Richard resulted in a truly amazing musical experience and each of them deserve a round of applause! During quite a few songs, I felt tears well up in my eyes and did my best to keep from crying. I was honestly moved to tears! Words can hardly begin to describe the MAGIC that took place on that stage! I couldn't have wished for a better seat. I was at the very first table attached to the stage, about two feet from Richard! But actually there really wasn't a bad seat in the house. The Bottom Line is a very cozy environment, perfect for Richard's musical style. I want to give WFUV my praise and gratitude for enabling me to attend this spectacular concert and sharing this wonderful evening with my mother. This will certainly be a cherished memory for all my remaining years. And if WFUV were to ever have another SongBook Essay Contest, I would definitely draw upon this memory as my source of inspiration! Thank you WFUV for introducing me to such an incredible artist! After the show I was so impressed and overwhelmed I could hardly contain myself. I cannot believe there was this amazing artist out there in the musical world I didn't know about! Now, I know what I have been missing out on and I plan to pick up ALL of his CD's A.S.A.P!! I have been to practically one hundred shows in my 27 years, but I must say this was one of the best I have ever attended!! I am so thrilled to have discovered Richard Shindell. I feel as though a whole new world has been opened up for me! I would love to correspond and get to know all of my fellow Richard fans!!! (I'M DONE!!! I'M DONE!!!) Now all I have to do is get someone to hire me as a lawyer... And in the words of someone famous, "What was I thinking?" I tell ya, I'm never going to do THAT again! My words of advice for anyone who is thinking of going to law school part time and working full time like I did, try to get it so you only have to work part-time.... It's not worth the high blood pressure and ulcers! Thanks to all of you for your words of encoragement... If it wasn't for Law School I never would have been on these lists... and met all of you wonderful people... Candy (finally able to clean my house and run errands and do other homey stuff... and go to concerts without guilt! Well, at least until I start studying for the Bar.) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 17:21:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Vanessa Wills Subject: [RS] help! Hey, listers, My first solo graveyard shift at WPRB happens 1-4am Sunday morning (or Saturday night--you get the idea). Three hours long. Ack! The station tends to focus on rock, with some folk, and lots of jazz. I would really love any suggestions you guys had on great songs by non-mainstream artists that I could play (the station eschews major labels). If anyone has any ideas, could you e-mail me off-list and give me a hand? Thanks! :-) In other news. . . I have about forty-five pages of writing due on the 9th, and so far I've written two pages. Two. Call it Professor Singer's revenge--At this point, it's down to a fight or a flight, if you know what I mean. arggggh.
