Subject: [RS] Last night at the Barns - magnificent

So the show starts at 7:30; we arrive about a quarter to seven and take a 
little walk before entering the venue.  As we round the last corner of the 
Barn, lo and behold Richard himself is sitting on the back steps enjoying a 
cigarette and composing a set-list.  I am taken completely by surprise and 
manage a weak hello.  He says "Going in the back way, I see."  I nod.  
Eventually I regain my strength and manage to have an okay conversation.  I 
asked if "Fleur-de-lis" was on the list.  He said "Well, I only have 60 
minutes so that one might fall by the wayside."  He signed my CD.  Everything 
was great.

Debi Smith "co-headlined" with Richard - each did about a 60 minute set.  I 
was largely unfamiliar with her music, but was impressed by his set.

Richard comes out and performs:
NEXT BEST WESTERN (w/ "deliver me from" story)
KENWORTH OF MY DREAMS (w/ "Peterbilt" reference)
CONFESSION (w/ the duck story)
TRANSIT (absolutely amazing.  After this he told a new story.  He said he had 
made up all of the names that appear in the song.  When he was in New York (I 
assume earlier this week), a small bulletin had been delivered to a radio 
station that had played Richard's song.  The bulletin was from St. Agnes' 
church in Paterson, NJ.  Attached was a small index card with the note "I am 
in "transit" praying for you, Sister Maria"  Oooooooooh.  Richard said "I 
tend to be an empiricist, but times like this I have to give up.")
WISTERIA (told how people with bad taste can't be trusted with money)
FISHING
LAZY (w/ bossa nova story and extra verse)
YOU STAY HERE
REUNION HILL
(explained how he had just played a week with a band and how enjoyable it 
was.  Now that it was over, he said he was so depressed he had to go 
shopping. . . "and bought this": a brand new Martin guitar.  For those 
interested, It was the solid mahogany style.  This one was tuned to standard 
tuning)

All in all a really fantastic show.  
Another aside:  marvelous singer/songwriter and long-time Mary Chapin 
Carpenter guitarist John Jennings was in the audience.  I managed to talk to 
him briefly after the show and told him how much I enjoyed his solo work.  He 
says he has no plans to tour solo, but that Chapin is planning a huge tour 
next year.  Can't wait.

Enjoying a CIGARETTE????? Oh richard, richard!!!  We thought you gave it
