["Rich Boniface" Subject: [RS] Hey, my dog has the same birthday as Marconi! I confess, I have absolutely nothing interesting to write about, I just couldn't resist sending a post with that subject line. Um, I'm really excited about seeing Richard with an Actual Band . . . is that enough of a reason to post? I've never seen him accompanied by more than Billy Masters - who is awesome, but it should be extremely cool to hear the other instruments, too. I can't wait until Friday. Okay, now I feel justified for posting. Watson turned 6, by the way. We gave him a slice of cake and put a birthday card next to his water bowl. Ciao! Hey Everyone... I wrote to the list about a month ago asking about Richard's Bottom Line gigs and expressing my interest in going. So, finally...the night that I am to embark on the 10 hour bus ride has come. I shouldn't even really be moaning about the length...it will be more than worth to finally see Richard in person....you know, I've never even seen a video of the man! I'm more than excited...I'm elated, ecstatic, electrified...well, you get the point... For anybody who is going to the 7:30 show and wants to say a quick hello, I'll be the guy, most likely dressed in a semi-flashy blazer, and I'll be with my mother, who has hair that resembles Connie Francis'... ;) Hopefully I'll go to 10:30 show as well...if it's not sold out!! See You There! Michael from Toronto ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 19:43:42 -0400 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] Off to The Bottom Line!!!! Notes from the Dorm: A snippet of my latest conversation with my roomie. <"Transit" playing in the background.> Cindy: "Lobsters and burgers?" Vanessa: "No, 'mobsters and murderers'." Cindy: "Oh, sorry. I'm hungry." At any rate, I too, will be skulking about at the Bottom Line, flying solo, which I'm hoping, if nothing else, will help me get a better seat in the theatre. I'll be the 19 year old Black girl, looking very excited, or tired, or both. I'm pretty psyched. Before I leave for the concert, I'll be attending a round table on how ethics can be taught in the university, which will include Peter Singer, Toni Morrison, and George Will, among others. Should be fun! Also random, last Friday night/ Saturday morning, at 12:30 am, a friend and I performed some songs for an Earth Day open mic. We did two Richard songs and one Dar ("Reunion Hill," "Ascent (unaccompanied)" and "Calling the Moon"). We also did "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young and worked out the most beautiful harmony I've ever sung in. Our voices blended like cinnamon and sugar. :-) At any rate, it all went over real well with the crowd, and who knows, maybe we made some new Richard-fans? It was almost transcendental, watching my friend Jason play "Reunion Hill" on his guitar, hearing that music be made. . . covers are a great thing. :-) - --Vanessa - -- "If we're to be damned, let's be damned for what we truly are." --Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise-D ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 20:40:04 -0400 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] Valley Advocate Review I had been wondering why the valley Advocate (for those outside the Conn. River valley, it's the "alternative" paper here) had not reviewed SOMEWHERE NEAR PATERSON. Well, in time for Richard's appearance at the Iron Horse, they have and it's a really nice review. Norman ********************* "Folk's Finest" by Rob Weir Richard Shindell SOMEWHERE NEAR PATERSON ****** Somewhere Near Paterson confirms two folk rumors: that Richard Shindell is the best songwriter in America and that Whatley's Signature Sounds is rapidly becoming the best small label in the land. This is a work of stunning maturity and is as well-produced as anything you'll ever hear. "Confession" opens with Larry Campbell's cittern and Lincoln Schleifer's harmonium preludes, perfect mood setters for an edgy song about looking for easy answers in an unforgiving world. But Shindell gives us a velvet glove as well as an iron fist; "Wisteria" is tear-inducing, made all the more so by Campbell's mournful fiddle. Fans of the Cry, Cry, Cry tour will delight in Shindell's harmonies with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky on Buddy Miller's "My Love Will Carry" (sic) , but it's Shindell's originals that take center stage. "Waiting for the Storm" sounds like a blue-grass standard, while "Transit" is as cryptic and provocative as a Leonard Cohen poem. Look for this album to walk off with a fistful of honors at year's end. It's early but not too early, to declare this one of the decade's finest works. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 21:16:43 -0700 From: ptpower@juno.com Subject: [RS] Re: Valley Advocate Review Thanks for the review, Norman! I'm glad to see that there are people out there -- other than us rabid listers -- who are slinging around such superlatives about this record. Yup, I, too, will be at the 7:30 Bottom Line show! Woo-hoo! I'm certainly excited and looking forward to it. I'll probably be standing outside from 6-6:30 waiting for my friends to get there, so feel free to say hi and keep me company! There's pictures of me scattered around my band's website, actually, if you take a look at www.ccrailroad.com I'm the big guy with the squinty glasses and the goatee. Hope to meet up with some of you folks! - -Rich ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V2 #47 **********************************
